Can I drive a car in Georgia while I'm waiting for license plates?

I purchased a vehicle in Macon through a private seller. I don't have plates on it currently, and the state has a backlog. Can I drive the car while I'm waiting for license plates?

Good news: You can legally drive your car in Georgia for a limited time while waiting for your new license plates, but it might be a bit of a hassle. You also may be pulled over frequently.
Typically, Georgia allows drivers to drive without plates for seven days after purchase. If there is a backlog, however, you can contact the DMV to get an extension of up to 30 days.
Keep in mind: The police won’t have a record of your recent vehicle purchase, so you’ll need to have the bill of sale and proof of insurance on hand to prove you’re not driving a stolen car.
