Can I change home insurance after a claim?

My backyard shed was knocked over by a windstorm and I had to file a claim with my home insurance. I thought it wouldn't be that hard, but nobody’s returned my calls in weeks. I'm frustrated and want better customer service. Is it possible to change home insurance companies after filing a claim?

Yes, you can change home insurance providers after filing a claim. However, only your current company can fulfill the claim you’ve already filed. Any coverage agreement you begin with a new company cannot take effect retroactively. It’s frustrating, but you need to keep calling—and contact your state’s insurance commissioner!
In the meantime, you can comparison-shop for a new provider by comparing quotes. If you have a vehicle, you could save a lot of money by buying a
car and home insurance bundle
Keep in mind all insurance providers share claims information in a secure database known as Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE). Your new provider may be able to see the claim you filed and use it in their premiums calculations.
