Are careless driving and reckless driving the same?

We’re learning about different types of traffic violations in my driving class right now and I’m confused by some of them because they seem so similar. Is there a difference between careless driving and reckless driving? The descriptions sound the same to me.

While the two offenses sound very similar, careless driving and reckless driving are not the same. The difference between the two charges comes down to willfulness.
Reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle with a disregard for others’ safety or property. It’s also classified as a criminal offense, meaning you can get jail time if you’re convicted of reckless driving.
Careless driving, on the other hand, involves operating a vehicle in an imprudent or uncaring manner. However, this offense does not assume a disregard for the safety of others.
As such, careless driving is a traffic violation, not a crime! You might be hit with heavy fines and
points on your license
, but you won’t have to serve jail time.
