This New Subaru Still Comes with a Stick Shift

Manual transmissions are not a hot commodity these days. Many automakers are phasing them out. Even sports cars like the Toyota Supra and Chevy Corvette don’t offer three pedals in their 2021 models. But
Subaru
is bucking that trend.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ comes standard with a stick shift. The automaker offers the coupe with an automatic gearbox, but it costs an extra $1,600. And the surprises don’t stop there.
Arguably the most shocking aspect of the stylish car is its price. When it arrives at dealerships this fall, you’ll be able to drive it off the lot for less than $29,000.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ will still offer a manual transmission.

What do we know about the 2022 Subaru BRZ?

The BRZ does not have a lot of peers in the affordable sports car segment.
Car and Driver
compares the Subaru and its twin-cousin the Toyota GR 86 to only three other models—the Nissan Z, the Fiat 124 Spider, and the beloved Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Both sports coupes got a horsepower upgrade for their 2022 models, bumping up from 205 to 228 thanks to the new 2.4-liter flat-four-cylinder "boxer" engine. The BRZ comfortably seats two adults, with a backseat that’s more suited for folding down to store racing tires.
Subaru also added new driver-assistance tech like forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control—all while bringing the price of the car down.

Other 2022 cars still offering manual transmissions

Manual transmissions are trending downward, but you can still get your hands on a stick shift in a number of different styles. Practical sedans like the Volkswagen Jetta, the Chevy Spark, and the Honda Civic still offer manual gearboxes, though they all come standard as automatics.
Car and Driver says you can also use both feet to drive five new SUVs: the Ford Bronco, Hyundai Venue, Jeep Wrangler, Kia Soul, and Subaru Crosstrek.
That said, the majority of models still providing a manual option are sports cars. Of the 28 models offering "standard" transmissions, 16 are safely in the "sport" category.
As automakers continue to phase the third pedal out of their vehicles, sports cars will likely be the last type to offer both transmission styles.

The Subaru BRZ is a hard car to define. Its design screams speed, but its price comes off as practical. Because of this, insurance rates for the BRZ vary a lot more widely than the average vehicle.
Other factors like your age and driving record also greatly affect insurance rates for a BRZ, so shopping around for the cheapest rate is especially important.
