How do I put a Subaru in neutral with a dead battery?

I didn’t drive my Subaru for a while and now its battery is dead. However, it’s angled so I can’t get a good look at the battery or remove it to test it. Is there a way to put a Subaru in neutral if it has a dead battery?

Here’s how to put a Subaru in neutral if its battery is dead:
  1. From the driver’s seat, you should see a small circular plastic piece in front and to the left of the gear shift. Pry this out with a flathead screwdriver.
  2. The hole that remains is where your manual gear shift override switch is located. Shove a screwdriver into this hole until you feel the spring-loaded switch.
  3. Keep this pushed down and shift the car into neutral.
In these types of situations, a little peace of mind goes a long way. As such, you may want to consider
towing and labor coverage
for your next car insurance policy — it works just like roadside assistance.
