The Toyota Corolla is a classic. While it was once thought of as the car you let your teenager drive, the model’s reputation for longevity and fuel economy has turned it into a cultural icon.
The model has gone through numerous changes over the years, from its original design as a sedan, to trimming up as a hatchback coupe, and then evolving into a compact station wagon. Now, Toyota has turned one of the best-selling cars on the road into a crossover SUV.
Learn more about the new Toyota Corolla Cross SUV, how it fits in with the rest of the automaker’s 2022 lineup, and how to find cheap car insurance for any new vehicle below.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross
Kelley Blue Book says Toyota built the 2022 Corolla Cross around the same chassis and 2.0 liter, 169 horsepower engine as previous Corollas. But the Cross comes with a rugged exterior and the option of all-wheel drive that brings vehicles like the Subaru Crosstrek or the Hyundai Tuscon to mind.
Besides gaining all-wheel drive capability and a mean-looking new body, the new Corolla Cross also features LED lighting, single-zone climate control, a 7-inch infotainment display, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. You get all this, standard, for what KBB expects will be a reasonable $20,000 or so.
How the Corolla Cross fits into the Toyota family
All this talk of the Corolla joining the SUV market might have you wondering what separates it from its brother, the RAV4.
The comparisons with the RAV4 are part of Toyota’s strategy, as the company tries to wedge the new Corolla between it and the C-HR, which Toyota also bills as a crossover but, let’s face it, is really just a car.
The Corolla Cross and the RAV4 are not the same vehicle, mind you. While details of the 2022 RAV4 haven’t been released yet, KBB says the 2021 model comes with a 2.5-liter, 203-horsepower engine, which explains its higher price point.
How to find the right insurance for your new crossover SUV
With the sales of SUVs far surpassing sedans these days, chances are a 2022 Toyota Corolla is not be your first foray into the sports-utility market. You are probably also aware of the higher premiums that tend to accompany the added legroom and road clearance.
