GM's Ultium Drive EVs Will See Their Debut Soon

GM has shifted its focus to electric vehicles (EVs), and this has come with new releases like the
Chevy Bolt
and the Chevy Bolt EUV. The company has also pledged to have 30 new EVs by 2023.
However, that’s not all GM has been working on in the EV sector. According to
CNET
, GM will be releasing some of its new EVs equipped with the company’s Ultium Drive electric motors.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup will feature GM’s new Ultium Drive electric motors.

How do the GM Ultium Drive electric motors work?

GM revealed their Ultium battery technology last year. Each of the three Ultium Drive motor types is versatile and can theoretically work in any EV, though GM is currently planning to pair them with larger models.
The Ultium motor comes in front-drive, rear-drive, and all-wheel drive assist models. The front-drive motor can produce up to 180 kW, but there’s a high-powered option for front-drive with 255 kW. Rear-drive also has 255 kW, and both rear and front-drive are permanent magnet motors. The all-wheel drive works on an induction motor, so it only generates 62 kW.
Each of these motors can work in tandem with each other in various groupings depending on the car to create the most efficient power system. Larger models will likely have combinations of all three types, and smaller models will have one to two of them.
Ultium software is modular, making it cheaper to maintain for GM. The configuration will allow engineers to make small changes for different vehicles rather than re-engineer the software every time.

Which vehicles will have Ultium technology?

The first of the new Ultium motors will be present on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, which will have three of the 255 kW motors. Together, they should be able to give the new Hummer up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque and an impressive 1,000 horsepower.
The Ultium batteries will supply the pickup with an estimated 350 miles of range. Due to the number of batteries required, the truck will weigh a whopping 4.5 tons.
GM will also include Ultium technology in the Cadillac Lyriq, as well as the Cruise Origin, which is a new self-driving car. The GMC Hummer EV SUV will also have Ultium capabilities, however, that model won’t be released until 2023.
