What is Tesla steering mode?

Tesla’s Steering Mode gives you choices when it comes to how you want the handling of your Tesla model to be—whether you’re behind the wheel of a classic
Model 3
or the family-friendly
Model Y
. Some people love a steering wheel that’s buttery smooth like that of a luxury sedan. Others prefer something a little more taut and resistant, similar to a burly GT.
You’ll be able to set the Steering Mode to one of three preferences that feel best for you:
  • Comfort - which makes turning the steering wheel light and easy
  • Standard - according to Tesla, this setting is the best for handling and quick response
  • Sport - increases tension within the steering wheel and can feel more responsive at higher speeds
When you’re cruising around town running errands and bringing the kids to sports practice, you may find that switching to the Comfort setting makes parking and stop-and-go driving easier.
Or, maybe you live in an area where the roads get slushy and snowy every winter. If you need to brave the elements in less-than-ideal road conditions, consider setting the mode to Standard for maximum handling.
Hitting the open highway on a long road journey? Check out the Sport setting to give your Tesla better handling on a fast-paced straight away.

How to turn on Tesla steering mode

Turning on Tesla Steering mode is super easy! Just follow these basic steps:
  • Before you drive, press the car icon on the touchscreen to get access to the settings
  • On your touchscreen settings, go to Controls > Pedals and Steering > Steering Mode
  • Choose between the Comfort, Standard, and Sport options depending on your steering preference
If you need to change your Steering Mode for any reason, do not make steering mode adjustments while driving. Simply pull over when it’s safe to do so, then adjust the Steering Mode via the dashboard touchscreen. The last thing you want is to cause an accident due to
distracted driving
that could injure you and increase
the cost of your Tesla insurance

How long can you leave Tesla steering mode on?

Tesla Steering Mode has zero impact on battery usage, regardless of which model you drive. It’s a setting that’s akin to cruise control, meaning that it’s only engaged while you’re driving the car.

When should you adjust Tesla steering mode?

One thing to keep in mind is that if you have not changed the Tesla steering mode, the default mode is Standard. But, you might need to tinker around with your Tesla’s steering mode if:
  • Your wrists are getting sore on a long drive. You may want to opt for Comfort mode in this situation.
  • You’re on a long drive and you want an improved feel of the road. This would be an appropriate time for Sport mode.
Ultimately, Steering Mode is a driving aid provided by Tesla that helps you to always feel comfortable behind the wheel, so that you can get where you’re going safely.

No. Tesla Steering Mode is a standard feature on all Tesla models.
It is not recommended that you adjust the steering mode on your Tesla while your vehicle is in motion. If possible, pull over to the side of the road and make the proper changes.
