Tesla’s romance mode is a wacky onboard Easter egg designed to break the ice and crack a few smiles. Once activated, this engages front-row seat heaters, turns your center console into a flickering fireplace, and starts the “romance mode playlist” — letting you bring date night wherever the road takes you.
More of a gag than a practical function, romance mode is an addition to Tesla’s ever-growing cabinet of onboard Easter eggs. For those not fluent in programming lingo, Easter eggs are hidden digital features that appear on all Tesla models.
Tesla’s current Easter egg list includes rover mode, more cowbell mode, and spinal tap mode — to name a few. These features transform your nav screen into the surface of Mars, play Blue Oyster Cult’s "Don’t Fear the Reaper," and set volume control to 11, respectively.
While your romance mode mileage will vary, there's no denying the Tesla’s engineers' engaging sense of humor. With the tap of a button, the cabin transforms into a cozy oasis for you and up to four passengers — a literal log cabin! Just make sure you’re in a safe location before you set the mood.

How to turn on Tesla romance mode
To activate Tesla romance mode, follow these steps:
- Park your vehicle (mode won’t activate in drive).
- Tap the three dots at the bottom of the touchscreen.
- Select toybox.
- Scroll the fireplace icon.
- Select get cozy.
The romance playlist is organized by shuffle. Current song doesn’t fit the mood? Swipe the scroll icon to the right to skip to the next tune. Pressing the left scroll button will mute the music.
Drivers can also adjust the romance mode interior temperature. To do so, set the temperature directly through the romance mode app or using voice commands, i.e., “lower temperature” or “set seat heater to x.” To exit romance mode, tap the touchscreen or put your Tesla in drive mode.
How long can you leave Tesla Romance mode on?
Tesla romance mode has a minimal impact on battery life, consuming just 7 kW (or 5 miles) per hour. Seat heaters drag the largest amount of power from your battery. Looking to keep things at peak efficiency? You can lower romance mode heating through the Tesla app.
Whatever the occasion, keep an eye on Tesla's battery gauge. Once you receive that handy “below 20%” notification, it might be time to put out the fire.
