In urban settings,
electric bikes
are quickly becoming a
popular form of commuting
. They’re compact, efficient, and of course, make biking easier and quicker. But electric bikes have ventured into new territory; where once they were limited to the confines of the city in order to recharge, the all-new Mokwheel Basalt has a self-charging station. It can even charge your iPhone, too.
Okay—so maybe Jerry can’t charge your electric bike or your iPhone. But we can help you save hundreds on your
car insurance
policy if you download and use our app. And we think that’s just as impressive.

The Mokwheel Basalt: An overview

As
InsideEVs
points out, the Mokwheel Basalt technically has unlimited range, considering that its solar-powered battery pack can allow for on-the-go recharging. The battery on the Mokwheel Basalt is no joke, either—a 960-watt power source keeps this bike moving.
The rear of the bike has the electric motor: a 750-watt powerhouse that can, according to Mokwheel, climb a 20-degree hill effortlessly. That being said, this bike weighs 36 kilos—almost 80 lbs—and the motor and battery pack definitely add to its curb weight.

How does the Mokwheel Basalt manage to charge phones and other devices?

The Mokwheel Basalt uses what is known as an inverter in order to offer charging compatibility for DC charging, AC wall outlets, USB cables, and Type-C-based devices.
It should be noted, though, that the inverter tacks on an additional $400 to the Basalt’s price. And the $600 solar panels aren’t actually included, even though it’s marketed to appear that way. In all, the Mokwheel Basalt, with panels, and inverter included, costs $3,000—by no means a cheap bike.

Is the Mokwheel Basalt a good buy?

Unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket, $3,000 is by no means cheap. But compared to other electric bikes, which can cost upward of $7,000, the Mokwheel Basalt is definitely one to consider.
There are electric bikes that cost half the price of the Mokwheel Basalt, but as
Bicycling
points out, they’re typically rated between 30-45 miles of battery range. Even though it comes with somewhat of a hefty price tag, the Mokwheel Basalt technically has unlimited range, which adds a lot of value to this electric bike.
Customers who are looking to save more on their purchase might even say no to the solar panel-based charging pack and inverter, easily knocking off $1,000.
