The Jeep Wrangler 4xe (pronounced “four by ee”, btw) is one of the latest offerings from Jeep, and combines the eco-friendly factors of a PHEV with the rugged functionality of a Jeep Wrangler.
If you’re looking for the most affordable or efficient PHEV available right now, this certainly isn’t it. If you just want a supremely capable off-road-ready vehicle, then the Wrangler is also available in a host of other gasoline-only trim levels.

Pricing
This is a particular combination that doesn’t come cheap. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe starts at $54,595 for the lowest trim level, and at $60,170 for the top level High Altitude trim. By way of contrast, the lowest level non-PHEV Wrangler starts at $31,590.

Performance and fuel economy
The Wrangler 4xe’s fierce 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque comes courtesy of a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four engine paired with two electric motors. Four-wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission.
Fuel economy isn’t a strong suit of the Wrangler 4xe, with a combined MPGe of 49. On gasoline only, it gets a combined EPA estimate of 20 mpg. Like all PHEVs, the Wrangler 4xe is capable of operating short-term on electric only, and can go around 21 miles on battery alone.
When it comes time to charge the beast, the Wrangler 4xe can be charged in about 2 hours with a Level 2 charger, and in 12 hours with a regular household Level 1 outlet. This offers plenty of flexibility for charging either overnight at home or when you’re on the go.
To make things more interesting, Jeep has announced that it will be installing solar-powered charging stations at key US trails, so you can top your Wrangler off before setting out on your adventure, or upon your return to the trailhead.
