The 2022 Jaguar I-Pace is joyful to drive and a feast for the eyes, but justifying its $71,050 price tag depends on how much you value speed, range, and braking ability.
From the eye-popping $110,295 GMC Hummer to the $34,395 Chevy Volt, today’s EVs cover a much wider range of prices and makes than they once did. Even Jaguar, a stalwart of the British sports car scene, has joined the fray with the I-Pace midsize SUV. The biggest change this year is an $11,000 discount, but is it worth it?
2022 Jaguar I-Pace pricing
After skipping 2021, the 2022 Jaguar I-Pace returns with a single trim level (the previously top-of-the-range HSE) and an $11,000 price drop to $71,050.
The Jaguar I-Pace is a rare cross between a sporty sedan and an SUV, handling like the former and hauling like the latter. Suspension is stiff without being uncomfortable and the low-slung silhouette offers great cornering and feedback from the road. Meanwhile, pop open the hatch and you'll find 23.2 cubic feet of storage. With its seats folded, the Jaguar can fit a respectable 54.1 cubic feet behind its front row.
When you look inside, the Jag continues to buck trends: its bucket seats have an undeniably racy flair, complete with a leaping Jaguar in silver on the steering wheel. While the design is more utilitarian than utopian, the asymmetrical dash, complemented by contrast stitching on the seats, oozes confidence.
The I-Pace will turn heads wherever you go, but the one place it lacks stopping power is, well, stopping power. Since its regenerative brakes can’t halt you completely, stopping becomes a two-part process. Whatever you think of acceleration times, suspension, or steering, a Jaguar that can’t come to a rest as quickly as it pounces will always feel unbalanced.

What’s the cheapest Jaguar I-Pace?
There is only one trim level for the 2022 Jaguar I-Pace, the high-end HSE, priced at $71,050. This might not appeal to buyers if it weren't for the fact that it costs about the same as the previous base trim, with every premium feature now standard. The list includes:
12.3-Inch digital gauge cluster
10-Inch infotainment touchscreen loaded with the re-designed Pivi Pro software
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless Bluetooth
Complimentary 4G data plan
Forward-collision mitigation, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot intervention, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition
Leather upholstery with 16-way power-adjustable, heated and cooled front seats
Multi-zone automatic climate control
Is the 2022 Jaguar I-Pace worth it?
Despite its relatively short warm-up in the midsize luxury electric SUV race, the Jaguar I-Pace has proven it can keep up with Tesla, Audi, and BMW. In a race from zero to 60 mph, it trails the Model X ($122,440) by only a second (4.3 versus 3.3). And at 394 horsepower, it’s competitive with both the e-Tron ($67,995) and iX ($85,095).
The I-Pace’s brakes are a let-down (as are its occasionally sluggish driver assistance aids), but it has more perks than jazzy styling. Jaguar’s excellent warranty covers the powertrain for five years/60,000 miles and the electric components for eight years/100,000 miles. Plus, it offers a sweet complimentary maintenance package that lasts as long as the powertrain guarantee.
If you're still undecided, let's examine three of the most important measures of an EV: performance, range, and reliability.
Performance
Even though the Jag isn't the fastest on the track, it isn't likely to be picked last in gym class. An electric motor duo produces 394 horsepower and 512 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 90-kWh battery. In contrast to most other SUVs, the I-Pace maintains a modest height of 61.3 inches so you can feel the road better. As you steer left and right, you’ll feel the battery pack acting like a ballast below your feet.
Range
The Jaguar I-Pace has a range of just 253 miles. It's a big eater too, gobbling 45 kWh per 100 miles for 76 combined mpge. That's not the worst, but it's not the best either, and it makes you doubt its ability to complete a long trip, especially considering it takes 8.6 hours to recharge. Still, you can charge your battery to 80% in less than 40 minutes if you find a DC fast charger.
