2022 BMW 3 Series plug-in hybrid
If you’re looking for a luxury PHEV that drives like a regular sporty gas vehicle, then the 2022 BMW 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid might be worth a look. Like the rest of the 3 series, the eco-friendly compact sedan provides quick acceleration and tons of standard features. But bonus—the 330 provides better fuel economy!
Pricing
Pricing on a brand-new 2022 model starts out at $43,945. While the 330e may not be the most affordable plug-in hybrid vehicle on the market, the luxury compact sedan is a great value compared to the base 330i
model in the 3 Series, especially in terms of performance and fuel efficiency. And to keep the savings coming, you’ll also be eligible to receive a federal tax credit
! Performance and fuel economy
Even as a PHEV, the BMW 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid doesn’t sacrifice performance. And thanks to the 330e’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor that generates 288 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque—you definitely won’t sacrifice fuel efficiency either!
However, the 330e’s electric range leaves much to be desired compared to other plug-in vehicles on the market. The 2022 3 Series plug-in hybrid comes equipped with a 13.8-kWh battery that provides 23 miles of full electric range on the rear-wheel drive model, while the all-wheel drive xDrive sedan drops down to 20 miles when fully charged.
On gasoline alone, the EPA estimates that the RWD 330e receives a combined fuel economy of 28 mpg, while gas and electric combined drastically improve with 75 MPGe. And just like its electric range, the AWD xDrive variant drops down a few pegs in terms of combined fuel economy with 25 mpg and 67 MPGe.
What about charging time? You can fully recharge your 330e in record time with a 240-volt charging station that will have you out the door in less than one hour. But if you’re using a standard 120-volt household charger, you’ll only get up to 4 miles of range per hour—or about 5 1/2 hours for a full charge.
Exterior styling
When it comes to the BMW brand, you can expect a beautiful blend of luxuriousness and sportiness every time—and the BMW 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid is no different. The bold exterior design comes with painted brake calipers to add to its sporty look while a new kidney grille and slim daytime running LED headlights make the 330e stand out from the crowd.
And talk about color options! The 330e is a metallic lovers dream. The sporty luxury compact sedan is featured in 11 colors:
Tanzanite Blue II Metallic
Skyscraper Grey Metallic.
Interior and comfort
While BMW is known for its ultra-refined interiors, the BMW 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid keeps it rather minimal. But that doesn’t mean the luxury compact sedan lacks in quality.
The 3 Series features wooden and aluminum accents to complement a world of comfort and convenience, and there’s plenty of room for up to five passengers. The 330e comes standard with a moonroof, multi-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and aleather-wrapped sports steering wheel.
But unlike the 330e’s gas-only counterparts that boast 17 cubic feet of cargo space, the 3 Series plug-in hybrid only gets 13.2 cubic feet due to its battery pack.

Technology
Tech-savvy drivers rejoice! The 2022 BMW 3 Series doesn’t disappoint when it comes to standard high-tech features. BMW’s iDrive infotainment system comes with an easy-to-use8.8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with navigation, a 10-speaker stereo, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and voice recognition.
While the 2022 BMW 3 Series earned a five-star NHTSA safety rating, standard driver-assistance safety technologies are lacking with just forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking to contend with. That said, there are additional safety features available, like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, rear-cross traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.
Warranty coverage
BMW's standard limited and powertrain warranties apply to the 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid, along with a decent PHEV battery warranty:
Limited warranty: four years or 50,000 miles (whichever comes first)
Powertrain warranty: four years or 50,000 miles (whichever comes first)
Battery warranty: eight years or 80,000 (whichever comes first)
Trim levels and options
The 330e model is the only PHEV trim in the 2022 BMW 3 Series, though you do have the option between the 330e RWD and the 330e xDrive AWD models.
Other trim levels in the lineup include the 330i,M340i
,M3
, and M3 Competition—though please note these are gas-only vehicles. The bottom line
The 2022 BMW 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid is a solid option in the luxury compact sedan class. If you’re looking for a sleek and sporty PHEV with stellar fuel economy that’s practical enough for everyday use, then the 330e is right up your alley.
