Is it true an electric Corvette hybrid is on its way?
After a few years of speculation, it appears that it's true, a hybrid version of the Corvette is getting ready to be launched. Back in 2015, GM obtained the E-Ray trademark, which it renewed in August of 2020.
Since then, many have questioned whether there would be an electric version of the Corvette Stingray. Having the trademark hasn't always meant a vehicle would get produced with that moniker.
But, since GM has plans to take on more electric vehicles, having the Corvette C8 E-Ray in its lineup soon makes perfect sense. Whether Corvette enthusiasts will embrace the gasoline engine/electric motor combo remains to be seen.
What will the electric Corvette C8 E-Ray offer?
The Corvette C8 E-Ray is making a step towards electrification, but it's not going all out just yet. The E-Ray is a hybrid version combining its 6.2-liter V8 engine with an electric motor system.
While no official information has been released, it's expected that the engine will generate approximately 495 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. That should be enough to please Corvette enthusiasts.
GMA(General Motors Authority), the Corvette C8 E-Ray will replace the Grand Sport, at least indirectly. It will slide into the lineup between the C8 Stingray and the C8 Z06.
MotorTrendreports that it will have an all-wheel drivetrain. It's also expected to come with some fuel savings features, like Active Fuel Management.
Another hybrid is on the horizon, this time with the C8 Zora, which takes the 5.5-liter V8 LT7 engine and pairs it with an electric motor setup, which will produce 1,000 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.
As for a release date, there's no official word yet, but it's estimated to arrive sometime in 2023.
GM electric vehicles expected to launch soon besides the Corvette C8 hybrid
General Motors has pledged that its brand will switch to electric vehicles within the next decade or so. We see that the company is serious about meeting that goal because several new electric and hybrid models are set to launch in the next couple of years.
In 2024, we should see the introduction of the
Chevy Silverado EV, Chevy Blazer EV, and Chevy Equinox EV. Its Cadillac brand is set to launch one as well that year, which is named the Innerspace AV concept.
With a lot of its models beginning the transformation from gasoline to electric, it was only going to be a matter of time before we saw a Corvette EV as well. It looks the time has come with the release of the E-Ray in 2023.
