The brand’s XC90 Recharge is set to join the all-electric lineup by the end of this year, but an upgrade to Volvo’s hybrid platform set for 2023 might have drivers holding off before letting go of their gas tanks.
Updates to the Volvo XC90 Recharge
By the end of 2022, the Volvo XC90 Recharge will be a fully electric SUV. But that hasn’t stopped the Swedish automaker from amping it up while it remains a plug-in hybrid.
The new battery pack in Volvo’s plug-in hybrid powertrain will help the car sip gas even more sparingly, but it isn’t the only change coming. The updated powertrain will offer twice the battery range of its predecessor, bumping the XC90’s range from 18 miles to 35.
A new rear electric motor will also offer 56 more horsepower, bringing the car’s total hp to 455, with 523 pound-feet of torque.
Other changes coming to Volvo
As previously noted, Volvo is diving headlong into the electric car market. By 2025, the brand plans to bring all its vehicles under the Recharge line-up, with half of its vehicles on hybrid powertrains and the other running fully on battery power.
Volvo started its electric lineup with two EVs: the XC40 Recharge and the C40 Recharge. By the end of this year, the XC90 is expected to join them, with the XC60 following suit in 2024.
The current all-electric powertrain’s 220+ range isn’t the longest in the industry. But its ability to charge to 80% of its capacity in 40 minutes makes it convenient enough for most drivers.
