background
With a combined city/highway rating of 26 miles per gallon (mpg), the 2022 Ram 1500 HFE EcoDiesel truck with RWD earns the title of Ram’s most fuel-efficient truck—and outperforms most of its competitors, too.
Finding an
eco-friendly pickup truck
was once paradoxical—but now, everything is changing. Over the past decade, mild hybrid technology has made its way into the full-size SUV segment—making these all-powerful, ever-capable haulers surprisingly economical.
But where does the fan-favorite Ram 1500 stand in all of this? Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at Ram’s most fuel-efficient truck models. Let’s get started.

Which Dodge Ram gets the best gas mileage?

The top Dodge Ram model for gas mileage is the 2022 Ram 1500 HFE (which stands for “high fuel efficiency”) with a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine and rear-wheel drive.
If that sounds specific, that’s because it is—given the numerous possible drivetrain, engine, cab size, and
bed size
configurations available on Ram’s best-selling truck, it’s important to make the distinction between them. After all, not all trucks are built the same!
Let’s take a closer look at Ram’s top three most economical trucks:
  • 2022 Ram 1500 HFE 3.0-liter EcoDiesel with RWD: 23 city / 33 highway / 26 combined mpg
  • 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 3.0-liter EcoDiesel with RWD: 22 city / 32 highway / 26 combined mpg
  • 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 3.0-liter EcoDiesel with 4WD: 21 city / 29 highway / 24 combined mpg
While their names read similar on paper, these models vary when it comes to performance specs. Below, we break them all down.

2022 Dodge Ram 1500 HFE (3.0-liter EcoDiesel with RWD)

With a starting MSRP of $45,400, Ram’s mild-hybrid 1500 HFE 3.0-liter EcoDiesel truck is surprisingly affordable—although it’s slightly more expensive than its gas-powered counterpart.
Just what makes this version of the Ram 1500 so fuel-efficient? For one, the traditional 3.6-liter, gas-powered V6 engine is traded out for a more powerful 3.0-liter Diesel V6 capable of 260 horsepower—and of carrying the classic Ram 1500 further on a gallon of fuel.
In this model, the cab configuration is also roomier and the truck bed is slightly shorter, measuring in at just 67.4 inches.
Rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes standard in this model, and we’d suggest keeping it if you’re looking for the top fuel efficiency this truck promises. The EcoDiesel engine outcompetes its mild hybrid fellows and gives fuel-savvy competitors, like the 2022
Chevy Silverado 1500
, a run for their money.

2022 Dodge Ram 1500 (3.0-liter EcoDiesel model with RWD)

Close on its heels is the regular, non-HFE version of the Ram 1500. Still equipped with a powerful 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel engine and rear-wheel drive, this truck is just one mile short from tying with its HFE counterpart, with an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.
What explains that difference? This model retains the quad-cab and long-bed layout, exchanging roughly ten extra inches of cargo space for slightly lower fuel efficiency.

2023 Dodge Ram 1500 (3.0-liter EcoDiesel model with 4WD)

Surprisingly, the newest 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 doesn’t outperform its predecessor when it comes to fuel economy—with a combined mileage of 24 mpg, the 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 EcoDiesel takes third place among Ram’s most fuel-efficient vehicles. If you’re comfortable swapping out a few extra miles for four-wheel drive and the latest gadgets, this model could be right for you.
Another reason to consider the 2023 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel? According to Dodge, it will be among the last trucks in their lineup to use an EcoDiesel engine before EcoDeisel models are retired to make room for the
upcoming all-electric Ram truck
. So if you’re looking for the power of diesel along with boast-worthy mileage, you’ll want to act fast.

2022 Dodge Ram 1500 HFE (3.6-liter gas/electric mild hybrid model with RWD)

Until the all-electric Ram is released, EV-oriented truck drivers will have to make do with Ram’s mild-hybrid model, the 2022 Ram 1500 HFE with a 3.6-liter gas/electric mild hybrid engine and rear-wheel drive.
Ram’s mild electric hybrid vehicles (MHEVs) are powered by an eTorque system that blends electric motors with traditional engines to improve fuel economy without impacting power, torque, or towing capacity. It’s not a full hybrid engine—rather, the electric motors recharge naturally as you drive, without requiring any external plug-in charge.
This version of the best-selling truck gets an estimated 26 mpg combined, although you’ll see significantly better fuel economy on highways than in the city. And with a starting MSRP of just $38,727, it’s not only eco-friendly but budget-friendly, too.

FAQs

With an EPA-estimated 10 city / 14 highway / 12 combined miles per gallon, it’s safe to say that the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX with a 6.2-liter supercharged engine and 4WD gets the worst gas mileage of any Ram model. On top of that, it only runs on premium gasoline—so you can expect fuel prices to be sky-high in this otherwise rugged and capable truck.
The 2022 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel doesn’t just get great reviews for gas mileage—it’s actually among the top fuel-efficient trucks in the full-size pick-up segment, tying with the 2022 Chevy Silverado. But the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is edged out by one fierce competitor—that’s the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid, which boasts a combined 37 mpg.
