1971 Buick Riviera

Al Pacino possesses an ageless sense of cool. Over a career spanning seven decades, the New York City native has netted an Academy Award, two Tony Awards, and two Primetime Emmy Awards—making him one of the few actors to win the Triple Crown of Acting. From the city streets of The Godfather to the cemetery in Hangman, Pacino’s timeless style commands attention wherever he goes, which is why the 1971 Buick Riviera suits him so well.
The Riviera entered the
Buick
line in 1949 as a sports luxury car with a name evoking the allure and beauty of the French Riviera. The car remained in production with intermittent hiatuses until 1999, a career nearly as long as Pacino’s!

Exterior

1971 marked the first model year of the third generation of Buick Rivieras. That year, the car underwent a radical redesign. Featuring “boat-tail” styling, side molding that harkened back to the Buicks of the 1950s, and large, round wheel wells, the 1971 Buick Riviera had a striking appearance. It had two doors, and a hardtop, and came in a number of colors, including the orange version seen in Hangman

Interior

The 1971 Riviera’s interior was roomy and plush. With foam padded seats, an electric clock, a tilt steering wheel, and a trunk light, the 1971 Riviera was way ahead of its time in terms of class and comfort.

Engine

The 1971 Buick Riviera was powered by a roaring, 7.5-liter, 315-horsepower V8 engine. Coupled with a three-speed automatic transmission, the Riviera could hold its own against any luxury car of its era. While it might not turn heads today with its 8.4-second 0 to 60 mph acceleration, it was outstanding for its time.
The 1971 Riviera also featured MaxTrac’s limited-slip differential. This feature employed an onboard computer to control power to the rear wheels, minimizing slippage. The engine was also redesigned to run on low-lead or unleaded gasoline and minimize exhaust pollutants.

Options

For its day, even the standard Buick Riviera was a luxurious and expensive car. Still, Buick offered a number of add-ons for drivers looking to option their Riviera even further to their tastes.
Optional features included: AM/FM stereo, 8-track manual or automatic climate control air conditioning, Soft Ray tinted glass, power windows, power seat, bucket seats, electric door locks, Cruise Master cruise control,  four-note horn, and a rear window defogger.

How can you buy a 1971 Buick Riviera?

When the third generation of the Buick Riviera was introduced in 1971, demand had dropped considerably for the luxury sports car. Despite its numerous advanced features, only 33,810 1971 Buick Rivieras were ever produced.
Thankfully, a number of 1971 Buick Rivieras remain, making it possible for you to buy one just like Pacino’s. The price depends on the condition and ranges from $30,000 to $100,000. If you want your 1971 Riviera to have the orange hue of the one from Hangman, you can purchase a custom paint job at your local body shop for about $4,000.
