What is the Chevrolet Suburban’s 3rd row like?

The full-size Chevrolet Suburban seats up to eight passengers thanks to its third row with space for three. If space in the third row ranks high on your priority list when shopping for an SUV, you’ll definitely want to consider the Suburban—it has up to five inches more space than some of its competitors.
The Suburban’s third row comes standard for all six of its trim levels. If you need the max seating for eight, you’ll still have a lot of options for trim—four trim levels offer seating for eight. For the top trims of Premier and High Country, the bench seat in the second row is exchanged for captain’s chairs, which brings the seating capacity down to seven.

Space and comfort

You could squeeze a third row into a lot of SUVs, but they won’t all be comfortable. How usable is the third row in the Suburban?
The first aspect of comfort is the amount of space available to a passenger. This means the legroom, headroom, and passenger volume all need to be adequate. Here are the dimensions for the Chevrolet Suburban:
  • Third row: 36.7 inches of legroom, 38.2 inches of headroom
  • Second row: 42 inches of legroom, 38.9 inches of headroom
  • First row: 44.5 inches of legroom, 42.3 inches of headroom
  • Total passenger volume: 176 cubic feet
It’s clear: the Chevrolet Suburban blows its competition out of the water when it comes to space. The third row is extra roomy, making it suitable for all children and most adults. While the second row has fewer inches of space than some of its rivals, the extra room in the front row more than makes up for it—all your passengers are sure to be comfortable, especially during longer trips.
If this is a little too much space to handle, you can downgrade to a slightly smaller (but still roomy) model like the
Hyundai Palisade
or
Volkswagen Atlas
. Wondering how these vehicles compare to other competitors? Check out the table below.

Is the Chevrolet Suburban good for big families and long trips?

The Chevrolet Suburban’s third row is perfect for big families with children of all ages, or for anyone with a lot of gear to haul or long trips to make.
The Chevrolet Suburban has one of the roomiest third rows available on the market right now, making it great for both adults and tall children alike. Long road trips are sure to be comfortable as well, and you can get the space of the third row without paying for costly trim upgrades—the base LS trim starts at $56,495.
How about some other features to sweeten the deal? Here are some other selling points of the Chevrolet Suburban:
  • Great safety features: The Suburban earned four out of five stars from the NHTSA thanks to Chevrolet’s Safety Assist technology.
  • Unbeatable cargo capacity: One reason minivans are so popular is because of their undeniable storage space. If you want to skip the small-town mom feel and go straight to soccer mom champion vibes, you’ll be glad to know the Suburban has a cargo capacity of 144.7 cubic feet when you include the passenger space.
Of course, we can’t decide if the Chevrolet Suburban is right for you—that’s for you and your family to decide! But if you’re a group that takes up a lot of space, the Chevrolet Suburban is a definite contender.
