Can you remove the second-row seats from a Honda CR-V?

You sure can! It will require a bit of elbow grease on your part, though, since they’re not designed to be easily removed and replaced like some SUVs and minivans.
Before you get started, you’ll need to be sure you have:
  • A socket wrench
  • Enough room to one side of your car to slide the back seats out the rear passenger door
  • You may also consider laying a tarp, moving blanket, or rug on the floor once the seats are removed to cover exposed metal brackets.
  • These seats are going to be heavy, so you may need to enlist some extra help to ensure you don’t injure yourself in the removal process.
Now that you’ve assembled all your needed tools and materials, you’re ready to begin the seat removal process. Remember, folding down your seats is a simple way to give yourself a bit more wiggle room in your CR-V, but if you need more room than that, let’s get started taking out those seats!

How to remove the second-row seats from a Honda CR-V

Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to remove the extra row of seats from your CR-V to create some extra hauling space:
  1. Move both front seats all the way forward. Technically, the seats can be removed without performing this step, but moving the front seats forward saves you from at least a few contortionist maneuvers.
  2. Locate all the retaining bolts holding the CR-V’s rear seat to the floor. These are located on the floorboard just below the seat. There is one retaining bolt on each side of the rear floorboard.
  3. Remove the retaining bolts with a socket wrench. Once the retaining bolts are removed, lift up and pull forward on the lower seat cushion to detach it from the floor of the vehicle, then slide it out the passenger door. This is where a second set of hands outside the vehicle can come in very handy.
  4. Remove the seatbacks from the sides of the vehicle by laying them down flat, removing the cargo liner, and pulling the seat cover up from the bottom of the seatback cushion to expose the mounting brackets and bolts securing it to the car.
  5. Remove the four mounting bolts from the brackets with a socket wrench, then lift the seatbacks out of the bracket and slide them out the passenger door.
And there you have it! You now have some extra cargo space in your CR-V. Be sure to put your retaining and mounting bolts in a safe place, so you can reinstall the seats when you’re ready!

How do you put the back seats down in a Honda CR-V?

If you've realized that you can get the space you need by just folding down your CR-V’s back seats, you can do that in just a few very simple steps. For newer model CR-Vs, just pull the handy lever located behind the rear seats on the side of the cabin—this will allow the seats to fold down in a single motion.
If you have an older model CR-V, you have a few steps to follow to fold down your seats. You’ll follow these steps twice—once for each section of the back rear seats:
  1. Push the seat belt buckles into the crease between the bottom and back seat cushions.
  2. Detach the center seat belt from the anchor and allow it to retract into the ceiling.
  3. Store the rear armrest.
  4. Turn the headrests down using the button next to each headrest.
  5. Lower the center headrest as far as possible.
  6. From outside the rear passenger door, locate the tab sticking out to the side from under the rear seat and pull it.
  7. Push the back of the seat down until it lays flat.
  8. Repeat this process for the other rear passenger seat.
