background
The 2022 GMC Canyon is available in two cargo bed sizes—a 5.14-foot 41.3-cubic foot short box and a 6.16-foot 49.9-cubic foot long box.
The Canyon is one of the most versatile pickups on the market. With three engine options, two drivetrain options, two cab options, and two cargo box options, you can configure the Canyon to be exactly what you need.
The mid-size pickup’s two gas engines offer decent mileage—22 combined mpg from the four-cylinder motor and 21 combined mpg from the six-piston power plant—but for maximum fuel efficiency, enthusiasts will love the Canyon’s four-cylinder diesel option that produces a combined fuel economy rating of 30 mpg. The Canyon offers a lot of punch in a small package which makes it great for city driving. But what kind of hauling is this little big guy capable of?

2022 GMC Canyon truck bed dimensions

There are two cab options and two bed options available on the 2022 GMC Canyon. The smaller extended cab is only available with the long 74-inch cargo bed, while units with a crew cab can be paired with either the long cab or the shorter 61.7-inch short box.
Here’s a closer look at the GMC Canyon’s truck bed dimensions:
  • Length: 61.7 inches (short box), 74.0 inches (long box)
  • Width: 57.8 inches, 44.4 inches (between wheel housings)
  • Volume: 41.3 cubic feet (short box), 49.9 cubic feet (long box)
The Canyon’s hauling capability depends on which engine and drivetrain configuration you choose more than body and box size. Models equipped with the 308-horsepower 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine can haul 1,500 pounds regardless of body and cargo bed configuration. Adding rear-wheel drive to your Canyon will also add to its hauling capacity—the rear-wheel drive extended cab model can haul the most with a max payload of 1,580 pounds.
Models equipped with the diesel engine option lose a bit of strength, with a 1,470-pound maximum payload, while four-cylinder models can carry a max load of 1,460 pounds. To put that into perspective, even the Canyons powered by a four-cylinder gas engine can carry five dirt bikes and still have the strength to carry an additional 59 textbooks.
That’s a decent hauling capacity for weekend warriors, but if lugging is a big part of your life, the
Chevrolet Colorado
may be more up your alley. The Colorado can carry payloads of up to 2,181 pounds with box dimensions almost identical to the Canyon.

2022 GMC Canyon cargo bed specs

The Canyon’s cargo bed is relatively simple, but the Canyon’s height makes loading and unloading a chore. GMC’s EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate is standard on all models except on the Elevation Standard. The Canyon comes with cargo bed tie-downs that can be positioned at 13 different points in the cargo bed—each tie-down can hold down 250 pounds of cargo.
Cargo bed LED lighting is optional, as is an off-road sports bar, soft box cover, a spray-on bed liner, and a rubber bed mat.
