The 2023 Toyota 86 should probably be a two-seater, but if you look really close, you can see there are two rear passenger seats.
Following a two-year hiatus, Toyota returned the 86 to its lineup, fully redesigned and renamed the GR86. Most of this redesign took place under the hood in the form of a more powerful engine. While the interior did receive some mild restyling, it did nothing to increase the torturously-tight quarters reserved for rear seat passengers.

The Toyota 86 is marketed as a four-seater, but the rear seats are better reserved for interior storage space than for actual passenger seating.
Do all 86s have seating for four?
Yes. The GR86 comes equipped with seating for four at every trim level.
Now that we’ve got the basics covered, let’s look at some of the 86’s other interior options.
2022 Toyota 86 interior
The Toyota 86 shares most of its interior styling with its mechanical twin: the Subaru BRZ
. Compact dimensions mean the passenger cabin is a bit snug, but front passengers will have plenty of room. A small steering wheel also makes entry and exit easy for taller drivers. That said, the low ride height will prevent all but the shortest passengers from making anything like a graceful entry or exit.
Once inside, the GR86’s front seats offer ample support and keep the occupant in place without feeling restrictive. As you’d expect with a compact sports sedan, cargo space is a bit cramped, but folding rear seats add more than enough room for running errands.
Dimensions
Seating dimensions for front-seat passengers are ample, even a bit spacious for a sports car. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for those in the back seat.

Cargo space
As it turns out, the 86’s rear seats are actually good for something—getting out of the way.
With the rear seats in place, the GR86 has only six cubic feet of cargo space. But, fold the rear seats down, and Toyota says you’ll have room to transport a full set of the 86’s replacement wheels and tires.
For comparison, the Mazda
Miata offers only 4.3 cubes for storage (with no folding seats). Which Toyota sports cars offer more seating?
The Toyota 86 may technically offer four seats, but if you’re looking for a sports car that offers more than just the illusion of passenger seating capacity, we’ve got something for you to consider.
The Toyota GR Corolla is a new addition to Toyota’s vehicle lineup for 2023. This hot hatch offers all the fiery speed and athletic handling of the GR86, but with seating for up to five passengers. And we do mean actual, real seating—Toyota has yet to offer interior dimensions for the rear seat, but the GR Corolla is a hatchback, so you can rest assured your rear passengers will at least be able to sit up straight—which is more than we can say for those relegated to the rear of your 86.
If you’re not above sacrificing speed for space, the Toyota Rav4
and C-HR also offer seating for five passengers, as do Toyota’s sedans, like the standard Corolla or Camry. If you’ve just realized you actually need to transport a large family, Toyota offers models, like the Sienna, Sequoia, and Highlander with seating for up to eight passengers.
