The 2017 Nissan Altima has a fuel capacity of 18 gallons and a full tank range of 486 city miles or 702 highway miles.
Knowing how much fuel your car’s gas tank holds is important. That information is available in your 2017 Altima’s owner’s manual, but if you’ve lost it, or if it’s being used to hold open a window at the cabin, don’t worry—we know a handy fuel spec savant!

How big is the gas tank on a 2017 Nissan Altima?

At 18 gallons, the 2017 Nissan Altima’s gas tank is larger than average—average being in the 13–16 gallon range. That’s good for long road trips. The more fuel your car can hold, the fewer stops you’ll have to make to fill it up.
There are five trim levels available for the 2017 Altima—the base model,
S
,
SL
,
SR
, and the
SV
. All trims come with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, but the SL and SR trims are also available with a 3.5-liter V6 motor. None of this changes your Altima’s fuel capacity, but your engine’s size may affect your car’s fuel efficiency (more on that later).

How to check your 2017 Nissan Altima’s gas tank size

If you want to be sure about your car’s fuel tank size, there are a few ways to verify.

Measure the gas tank

The first way is by doing it the way they did it way back when—by measuring. All you need is a measuring tape and a little bit of math knowledge—now might be a good time to check in on your fifth-grade math teacher on social media.
Here’s the process for determining how many gallons of gas your fuel tank holds:
  • Start by measuring the tank’s width, height, and length in inches
  • Multiply your three values together to find your gas tank’s volume
  • Divide the total volume by 231—that’s the number of cubic inches in a gallon
  • Look adoringly at your answer
So, for example, if your gas tank is 18 inches wide, 15 inches long, and 9 inches tall, your tank’s volume would be 18 x 15 x 9 = 2,430 cubic inches. Divide that number by 231, and you find that your gas tank holds 10.52 gallons of fuel!

Check your owner’s manual

If you don’t want to do all that grunt work, you can jump right to the source: your vehicle owner’s manual. You can find your car’s fuel capacity listed under “recommended fluids/lubricants and capacities” in section 10-2 of the 2017 Nissan Altima owners’ manual.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If you don’t have your owner’s manual, a measuring tape, or a good relationship with your fifth-grade math teacher, there is another way to figure out your Altima’s fuel tank size—but it’s not for the faint of heart.
Simply drive until your car is almost out of fuel. Then take it to the filling station and top off your tank. The gas pump should tell you exactly how many gallons you’ve pumped in, which will give you a rough idea of how many gallons your tank holds. Just be careful not to run completely out of gas while driving!

How to save on fuel costs in a 2017 Nissan Altima

The 2017 Nissan Altima comes standard with a 179 horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The SL and SR trim models also offer a 270 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine option. Either engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission or CVT. Fuel economy varies depending on which engine/transmission configuration your Nissan Altima has.
Here’s a look at the fuel economy for both set-ups:
  • 2017 Nissan Altima 4cyl CVT: 27 city/39 hwy/31 mpg combined
  • 2017 Nissan Altima 6cyl CVT: 22 city/32 hwy/26 mpg combined
As you can see, the larger V6 engine guzzles more gas than its four-cylinder counterpart.
No matter which engine you opt for, there are things that you can do to save yourself some money on fuel. Here are some tips:
  • Maintain your vehicle.
    Properly maintain your car
and you can prevent inefficiencies while conserving gas. Regular oil changes will go a long way in saving you money on gas and lowering your
    Nissan tune-up cost
  • Don’t floor it. Quick acceleration ramps up your RPMs and burns gas faster. Accelerating gradually will keep the RPMs down and help you save at the pump.
  • Avoid idling. There’s nothing worse than driving in a cold car, but
warming up your car in the winter
months wastes gas. Try letting your car warm up as you drive. You can put the money you save on gas toward a warm Hawaiian vacation.
