Massachusetts
residents will have to wait for oil prices to go down before they can save money.
Rising oil prices are just another way Americans are feeling crunched for cash. Thankfully, Massachusetts hasn’t increased its gas tax in years and its average gas prices are nowhere near the top.

How much is the gas tax in Massachusetts?

At the time of writing (September 2022), the Massachusetts gas tax is $0.24 per gallon. This rate took effect in 2013 after holding steady at $0.21 per gallon since 1991. And it looks like the current rate won't change anytime soon, either.
If only gas prices were as stable! As a result of the war in Ukraine, fuel stations across the nation raised their prices in 2022.
MA's gas tax rate might not have changed residents' driving habits, but high fuel prices did. According to AAA, two-thirds of Americans changed their driving habits in the past year, including driving less, combining errands, and reducing out-of-home shopping and dining.
Consumers spend a modest $6.72 on average on state and federal taxes each time they fill up.

Is gas tax relief on the way in Massachusetts?

A bipartisan measure to pause the state gas tax entered the Massachusetts Senate on March 17, 2022. The promise of economic relief was tantalizing, but critics pointed out that oil companies were not guaranteed to pass the savings on to consumers. With an 11-29 vote, the suspension was defeated.
The typical American car carries 13 to 16 gallons of gas, so Massachusetts residents would have saved $3.84 per fill-up at most. The "gas tax holiday" plans proposed by President Biden seem to have evaporated, leaving citizens to wait for falling oil prices to save money at the pumps.

How high are gas prices in Massachusetts?

The average gas price in Massachusetts is $3.564 per gallon, ranking 29th among all states. Compared to the other rates posted in September 2022, this is below the national average of $3.747 per gallon, and far below California, which topped the charts with $5.883 per gallon
