A Nissan Rogue has an engine oil capacity of either 5 or 5.3 quarts depending on the engine type. You can change the engine oil of your Rogue by removing the oil reservoir cap, draining the old oil, and replacing it with compatible synthetic or detergent oil.
Maybe you’ve reached the six-month mark after your last oil change, or your oil pressure warning light has illuminated on the dashboard. Oil changes can be a pain, but changing the engine oil in your Nissan Rogue is surprisingly simple (and cheap!) to do at home.

Nissan Rogue engine oil capacity

How much oil does a Nissan Rogue need?
A Nissan Rogue 1.5L engine oil reservoir holds 5 quarts of oil, which is around 4.7 liters. Meanwhile, the 2.5L engine hold a total capacity of 5.3 quarts (5.1 liters) of motor oil. Fresh oil is essential to keeping your car’s precious insides lubricated. Waiting too long in between oil changes can grind up your engine, and may lead to further damage down the line.

What kind of oil does a Nissan Rogue need?

Now that we know how much oil your Nissan Rogue needs, let’s talk about oil types.
Engine oils are made to fit your engine's needs in terms of how long they last, how much heat they can take, and how they fare in cold temperatures.
Nissan recommends you use SAE 0W-20 for your Rogue. It’s a good idea to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendation when performing regular maintenance at home.
Engine oil ratings can be confusing, so let's break down SAE 0W-20 into simpler terms.
Engine oils are rated by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for their viscosity at different temperatures. The goal is for the oil to maintain thinness and flow in the heat of your engine and in external cold weather.
The number before the letter “W” indicates the oil’s rating at winter temperatures. With a winter rating of 0, we can see that this oil will fare much better in the cold than, say, a 10W-20 oil might.
The number after the W is the oil’s heat rating. This has less to do with weather and more to do with the heat of your engine, which can reach a blazing 212°F. So, with a rating of 0W-20, we know that this oil performs perfectly in the cold and decently well in the heat.
What about synthetic oil? The Nissan company doesn’t specify the best oil makeup for the Nissan Rogue, just the rating. So as long as the oil you’re using is 0W-20, you’re cleared to use either full synthetic oils or blends.
  • The recommendation: Anything rated SAE 0W-20 will do well in your Nissan Rogue’s engine. You can find oils with this rating from any brand.

How often to change oil on a Nissan Rogue

Now that you’re an expert on your Nissan Rogue’s engine oil needs, it’s time to change your oil. Or is it?
As a rule of thumb, you should try to change your engine oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you don’t drive that often, checking on your oil every 6 months is probably a better metric for you. Oil will degrade naturally in your car over time, no matter how often you drive.
If you’re using fully synthetic oil, you can probably wait a little longer on that oil change. Experts recommend a change every 5,000 to 7,000 miles for full synthetic oil.
But whether it’s the 3,000 or 7,000-mile benchmark you’re waiting for, that’s a lot of ground to cover. You may need to change your oil early if you experience any of the following symptoms in your car.
  • A change in your engine oil’s color from red to dark brown or black
  • A noticeable change in texture, such as a coarse or gritty feeling in the oil
  • Unfamiliar noises coming from the engine, like squeaking or whining
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance overall

How to change your oil and oil filter

Enough beating around the bush: it’s time to change your Nissan Rogue’s engine oil.
You don’t have to be a grease monkey to change your engine oil at home. The process is pretty easy and much less expensive than seeing a mechanic.
Before you start, you’ll need a few
essential tools and supplies
. Grab a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to remove your old oil filter. You’ll also need a replacement filter and fresh 0W-20 engine oil to fill your reservoir. You can get all these at your local auto parts store.
Once you have everything you need, let your engine run for a bit to get it up to operating temperature. In normal weather conditions, this should only take a few minutes. Once you’re there, turn off your engine, pop your hood, and get to work with the following steps.
  • Remove the oil fill cap. It should be a red or black cap on the passenger side of your engine
  • Get under your engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, letting the old oil drain into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and drain the rest of the oil
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
And there you have it! You’ve changed the oil in your Nissan Rogue. Check the oil level in your reservoir with your dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough.
Once you’re done, run your engine for a few minutes and check for any leaks. If you’ve done everything right, the oil pressure light should turn off in your car after a few minutes.
