What is the right tire pressure for a Chevrolet Sonic?

The Chevy Sonic was sold in the US between 2012 and 2020 with a recommended psi for all model years between 35 and 38 psi. There will be some variation depending on the size of the wheels that originally came on your Sonic, but you can check the information placard that’s stuck to the driver’s side door jamb for the original recommended psi there.
If you’ve gotten some custom wheels or have changed out your tires since you bought your Sonic, then the recommended psi might be different than what’s on the sticker. Make sure that you know the specs and recommended psi for any tires that you put on your car from their own manufacturer—it’s a good idea to jot them down somewhere!
PRO TIP The psi that’s found printed on the side of a tire is the maximum psi and should not be confused with the recommended pressure.

MORE: How low can your tire pressure go?

How to check Chevrolet Sonic tire pressure

Most vehicles these days have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that keeps tabs on your tire pressure and alerts you if they get too low. But what if your Sonic doesn’t have this feature—or what if you suspect that it might not be working properly?
Fortunately, checking your tire pressure yourself is fast and easy—and a good skill to know, no matter what you drive. All you’ll need is a
tire pressure gauge
and a few minutes.
Here’s what to do: remove the little caps from the valve stems on your tires. Next, firmly push your tire pressure gauge onto the valve stem—you’ll likely hear a hiss of air, which is totally normal. The gauge should give you a reading of your tire’s current psi, and from there you’ll know if you need to add or remove air. Easy as that!
Besides seeing your TPMS light come on, there are a few other signs that might point to a possible problem with your tires. Poor handling, funky steering, and decreased fuel economy could all indicate improper tire inflation. If in doubt, check!

How often should you check tire pressure?

It’s a good habit to check your tire pressure at least once a month and always before you head out on any long drives or road trips.

How to know when your Chevy Sonic needs new tires

Typically, a vehicle will need new tires about every six years—but this can vary. When you do your monthly pressure check, you should take a gander at the condition of your tires and check them for signs of excessive wear and tear. You’re looking for bald patches, uneven wear, large cracks, bulges, or anything that looks off.
Tires all come with tread wear indicators found between the treads—the tires are definitely done when the treads wear down to the level of these. You can also grab a US penny and stick it in the tread with Lincoln head first. If you can see the top of his head, then it’s time for a new tire.

How to reset the Chevrolet Sonic tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light

Sometimes technology doesn’t work quite like it should, and there may be times when your TPMS light won’t turn off. If you’ve filled your tires to the correct psi, driven around a bit, and the light’s still on, you might need to
reset your TPMS
If it’s an older Sonic, you might have a TPMS reset light under the steering wheel. Park somewhere safe and hold down this button until the TPMS light flashes three times. After you’ve driven away, the light should turn off.
Newer models might have a menu option in the Driver’s Information Center that allows you to reset the TPMS from there. If neither of these options works, contact your Chevrolet dealership for assistance.
