background
If the “Check Hybrid System” warning light comes on in your 2007 Toyota Camry, it could indicate major issues with your car’s hybrid system—but it could also be a sign of a much less serious issue, like a blown fuse.
You don’t have to be an automotive expert to know how expensive hybrid battery replacements can be—and it won’t be covered by

unless it was damaged in a covered accident. Luckily, your Camry’s hybrid system warning light isn’t a definite indication of hybrid battery failure—it can also warn you of less serious (and cheaper to fix) issues.
We’ve created this guide to help you understand the types of issues your 2007 Toyota Camry’s “Check Hybrid System” light might indicate.

What does the “check hybrid system” warning light mean?

Fortunately, just because your 2007 Toyota Camry’s “Check Hybrid System” light has turned on, it doesn’t mean you have to replace your hybrid battery. That’s just one thing that can cause this warning light to blink on. It can also turn on as a result of more minor electrical issues or other mechanical problems.
Unfortunately, if your “Check Hybrid System” light comes in, it’s going to mean a trip to your dealership or local repair shop to get a diagnosis. Some of the key issues that can cause this warning light to turn on include:
  • A blown fuse
  • Inverter malfunction
  • Standard 12-volt battery failure
  • Hybrid battery failure
In some vehicle models, this warning light is color-coded to help you narrow down the cause of the warning light, but that’s not the case in the 2007 Camry. That’s why you’ll need to take your car to a mechanic who can scan for error codes in your Camry’s Onboard Detection (OBD) system. Just keep your fingers crossed that the code they find isn’t
the engine code P0A80
—this is the code that indicates you’ll be springing for a hybrid battery replacement.
Camry Hybrid battery packs last an average of eight to ten years. That’s the good news. The bad news is your 2007 Camry’s hybrid battery pack is fifteen years old if it hasn’t been replaced up to this point. At this point, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be forced to spring for a replacement.

When to replace your Toyota Camry Hybrid battery

If you’re driving a 2007 Toyota Camry, odds are, its hybrid battery pack was replaced somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 7 years ago. This means it’s about time for another replacement, as these packs are designed to last for about eight to ten years, or 150,000 to 200,000 miles.
Unfortunately, unlike the standard 12-volt
Toyota Camry battery
,  a Camry’s hybrid battery pack will likely cost upwards of $5,000 to replace.
Kelley Blue Book’s
fair market estimate for a 2007 Camry Hybrid in good condition is only $3,500 to $6,200. That means a hybrid battery replacement for your 2007 Camry Hybrid will likely cost you more than the total value of your car!
Luckily, you still have another option if your hybrid battery pack is failing—opting for a used or rebuilt battery. You can only get a used or rebuilt battery installed by an independent mechanic, but it often costs as little as $2,000. However, a rebuilt battery will likely wear out much more quickly than a new one, so saving a few thousand now could still wind up costing you more later on.
Bottom Line: Don’t jump into a hybrid battery replacement until you’ve had your Camry scanned for error codes. We’d hate to see you spend thousands on a battery pack when the warning light was just letting you know you need to replace a $20 fuse.

Signs of hybrid battery failure

Your Camry’s hybrid system warning light is just one way for your car to signal that something is wrong with your hybrid battery pack. Here are some other symptoms of hybrid battery failure you should look out for:
  • Decreased fuel economy. A 2007 Camry Hybrid returns an EPA-rated 34 mpg highway and 33 mpg in the city for a combined 34 mpg rating. If you notice your mpg isn’t as high as it once was, it could be a sign your battery pack is failing.
  • Erratic charging behavior. If your display shows your battery isn’t holding its charge or it’s losing charge overnight, it’s likely a sign you’re ready for a replacement.
  • Internal combustion engine (ICE) working harder. Over time, you’ll notice a rhythm as your Camry shifts between hybrid and ICE power depending on the hybrid battery’s current charge. If you start noticing this rhythm hitting a little heavy on the ICE side, it could be a sign your hybrid battery is about to die.
  • Tons of fan noise. Engine noise is a symptom of countless vehicle issues, and it can also signal your hybrid battery is in trouble. If you’re hearing a lot of noise from your engine’s cooling fan, it could be a sign your battery is overheating.
