The good news is that the “Check Hybrid System” warning light in a Toyota Camry doesn’t mean that your hybrid battery is definitely failing—any more than the check engine light means that your engine is about to die! Though both of these warning lights can be scary to see, they can indicate a wide range of problems, from minor electrical issues to major mechanical snafus.

The light turns on if a check of the car’s hybrid system has failed, but that doesn’t automatically mean that the hybrid battery itself is failing. A blown fuse, an inverter malfunctioning due to overheating, or a failing 12-volt battery

In some cars, the light is color-coded to help you narrow down the nature of the problem: yellow for milder issues like a problem with the car’s computer, and red for serious system problems. When to replace your Toyota Camry Hybrid battery
Your Toyota Camry Hybrid battery should last for about eight to ten years, or up to about 150,000 to 200,000 miles. That’s a lot longer than the three-to-five-year lifespan of a 12V battery, but it’s about standard for hybrid cars—and so is the high cost of a replacement.

Decreased fuel economy. The 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE gets an EPA-estimated 52 mpg combined, while older models get between 34 mpg and 40 mpg combined. If you notice you’re getting fewer miles to the gallon, take your Camry for a hybrid battery check.
Erratic charging behavior. A problem with your Camry’s charging system can lead to the battery failing to hold a charge. State of charge fluctuations are a major sign of battery failure.
