background
The 2019 RAM 1500 has an engine oil capacity of 5 quarts for the 3.6-liter engine and 7 quarts for the 5.7-liter engine.
The beefy RAM performs best when you stick to your manufacturer's recommended
car maintenance schedule
. One of the easiest maintenance tasks you can do from the comfort of your garage is an oil change. You’ll need to know your truck’s oil capacity, gather a few tools, purchase oil, and carve out some time—but you’ll save a bunch of money in the process.
If it’s your first time changing the oil, we’re here to guide you. Follow along as we tell you how much oil the 2019 RAM holds, what kind of oil it needs, how often to change it, and how to change the oil and oil filter step by step.

2019 RAM engine oil capacity

The 2019 RAM 1500 Classic can be fitted with either a 3.6L or 5.7L engine. A 3.6L RAM 1500 requires 5 quarts of oil, while the 5.7L engine needs 7 quarts
As you can see, the engine size in liters doesn’t coincide with the amount of engine oil you need. This is important to remember!
The liter measurement associated with the engine refers to the
engine displacement
. This is how much space the cylinders of an engine take up. It’s a completely different measurement than oil capacity, which is measured in quarts.

What kind of oil does a 2019 RAM need?

Motor oils are graded by their viscosity and formulation and may be endorsed by certain associations. That means you can’t just choose a bottle of oil based on the nicest label!
As outlined in the
2019 RAM 1500 owner’s manual
, RAM recommends Mopar SAE 0W-20 for 3.6L engines and Mopar SAE 5W-20 for the 5.7L engines. You may also use a different brand as long as it is SAE-certified and matches the recommendation.
Now let’s dissect what all that means.
  • SAE is the acronym for the Society of Automotive Engineers—the association that creates the standards for engine oil. Today, they’re known as SAE International.
  • The first number-letter pair refers to an oil’s viscosity when the motor is cold (“W” stands for winter).
  • The second pair refers to an oil’s viscosity at your truck’s operating temperature.
The lower the number, the thinner the oil. Now you know how to read oil grades!
Pro Tip If you ever forget what type of oil your vehicle needs, your oil filler cap is labeled with the oil grade.

How often to change the oil on a 2019 RAM

The 2019 RAM should have its oil changed every 3,500 to 10,000 miles. Conventional oil needs to be changed more often (every 3,500 to 5,000 miles), while you can drive further and change your oil less frequently if you use full synthetic oil (7,500 to 10,000 miles).
If you frequently drive in dusty conditions or take your RAM off-roading, you’ll need to get an oil change every 4,000 miles, though, due to the amount of debris that can collect in the engine. One thing’s for sure: don’t go without an oil change past 10,000 miles, 12 months, or 350 hours of engine run time—whichever comes first.
Thankfully, knowing when to get your oil changed isn’t a guessing game—your RAM will notify you with an “Oil Change Required” message on your instrument cluster. Still, the best way to verify an oil change is needed is by simple observation!
Here are some signs your engine is thirsty for an oil change:
  • Dark brown, black, or milky oil (clean engine oil is like a cup of tea while dirty oil looks like soda)
  • Oil feels gritty or grainy
  • Smoky or burning smells coming from the engine
  • Unfamiliar sounds coming from the engine
  • Underperforming vehicle

How to change your oil and oil filter

Before you get your hands dirty, make sure your truck is parked on a level surface with the emergency brakes on to ensure your safety. Lastly, turn your engine on for 5 to 10 minutes to warm up the oil.
Here are the tools you need for a successful oil change:
  • Wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Cleaning cloth
  • New drain plug washer gasket
  • New Mopar oil filter
  • 5 or 7 quarts of oil, depending on your engine
  • Dipstick

Follow these steps to change your 2019 RAM’s oil and oil filter.
  1. Position your drain pan below the oil pan.
  2. Use your wrench to loosen the oil drain plug carefully since the oil may quickly pour out. Wait for the oil to drain into the pan.
  3. In the meantime, clean the oil drain plug.
  4. Once the oil has drained, reinstall your drain plug and new washer gasket and tighten with your wrench.
  5. Use a cleaning cloth to wipe away any oil that may have gotten on your truck’s undercarriage.
  6. Next, locate the oil filter and position the drain pan underneath it.
  7. Unscrew the oil filter and allow the old oil to drain out.
  8. After the oil has drained, take your new oil filter, lubricate the gasket with oil, and tighten it closed.
  9. Head to the hood and fill your engine with 5 or 7 quarts, depending on your engine.
  10. Check the oil levels with your dipstick and top off if needed.
Before you start driving, warm your engine up for a minute and reset your oil life system
To do an oil life reset, follow these steps:
  1. Switch the ignition to the ON position (your engine should be off, though).
  2. Press the down arrow on your steering wheel to scroll to “Vehicle Info” and the right arrow to select it.
  3. Scroll down to “Oil Life” then push and hold the right arrow to select it.
  4. Select “Yes” and you’re done!
