What kind of oil does a 2018 Ram 5500 6.7 need?

But, don’t just grab 12 quarts of the first motor oil you see on sale! Specific motor oils are engineered to work in different engines—and using the wrong kind could damage your truck. For the 2018 Ram 5500 6.7L, Dodge recommends that you use SAE 5W-40 synthetic oil
If you’re not familiar with oil types, here’s what you should know. SAE stands for “Society of Automotive Engineers,” which regulates and codes oil types. The two numbers indicate the oil’s viscosity, or thickness, at different temperatures.
The “W” stands for winter, and the 5 next to it indicates that this specific grade of oil will flow well in 0°F temperatures. The 40 at the end indicates that the oil will maintain a suitable viscosity even at your engine’s ultra-hot operating temperature of 212°F.
Dodge suggests that you use synthetic, as opposed to natural or detergent, oil for the 2018 Ram 5500 6.7, as synthetic oil tends to be more long-lasting and efficient for diesel engines.

How often to change oil on a 2018 Ram 5500 6.7

Now that you know what kind and how much motor oil to purchase, you need to know when to change your oil. You should change your 2018 Ram 5500 6.7’s oil every 3,700 miles. But, you should check your oil at regular intervals like once a month or after every other refuel
Sometimes, you will need to get your oil changed a little ahead of schedule. Keep an eye—and an ear, and a nose—out for the following signs that there’s an issue with your engine oil:
  • Motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (Clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil is like a cup of soda.)
  • Motor oil feels coarse or gritty like it’s been mixed with sand
  • Strange new
    noises
coming from the engine while driving
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you’re due for a routine oil change and want to try tackling it yourself, you’ll first need the following
essential car tools and supplies
at the ready:
  • Socket wrench
  • Filter wrench
  • Drain bucket
  • Replacement oil filter
  • 12 quarts of SAE 5W-40 engine oil
Allow your truck to warm up to its normal operating temperature by letting it run for about five minutes. Once it’s warmed up, turn off your engine and complete the following steps:
  • Open the hood
and remove the oil fill cap
  • Under your truck, position the drain bucket underneath the drain bolt. Use your socket wrench to remove the drain bolt and allow the old oil to drain into the bucket for about 10 to 15 minutes
  • With your filter wrench, remove the old oil filter and continue to let the old oil drain into the bucket
  • Screw on the new filter
  • Replace the old drain bolt
  • Refill the engine with new oil and replace the oil fill cap
  • Run your engine for a couple of minutes to check for any leaks
Last step: clean up! Do not just dump your oil, dirty oil down any drain, or throw it in the garbage. You will need to place it in a sealed container and bring it to your local recycling center for proper disposal.
