Can I wash a car without soap?

I want to give my car a quick wash before I head out this weekend. Unfortunately, I don't have any car soap and the nearest store is closed. I know soap is best for a deeper clean, but will it actually do damage if I don't use it? Can I wash my car without soap?

“That’s a great question, and kudos to you for wanting to keep your car clean! Washing your car without soap is not recommended—but there are a couple other options.
Washing with only water and a sponge isn’t recommended because soap removes particles from the paint of your vehicle. When you wash without soap, you rub these particles into the paint. This means that instead of making your car cleaner, you might make it dirtier and ultimately need to
repaint your car
.
If you don’t have soap, your next best plan is to go to an automatic car wash. These aren’t as thorough, but you won’t damage your paint.
If you do choose to wash without soap, you run a risk of damaging the paint. If this happens, you may still be covered by your
comprehensive coverage
, although you’ll have to pay the deductible.
If you’re worried about damage to your paint for any reason and you don’t have comprehensive coverage, it might be wise to add it to your current policy. One easy way to do this is through the
Jerry app
—we’ll get you customized quotes from multiple providers, so that all you have to do is choose the policy that works best for you. And if you do decide to switch, we’ll help with that, too!
Best of luck, and keep that car clean!”
