How to reset the engine oil maintenance light on a 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Simple answer: take your 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio to an authorized dealer and get them to do it.
If you’re searching through Google for sketchy videos about resetting various things on other Alfa Romeo vehicles, frantically turning your car’s electronics on and off, or pushing pedals in various combinations, you wouldn’t be the first.  Countless owners of Alfa Romeo Stelvios have rushed to the internet to find this information since 2018. Everyone seems to have their own answer, and each one has their own crew of commenters calling it fake news.
The more you read forums and message boards of Stelvio owners trying to figure out how to reset their oil change lights and maintenance intervals, the more you realize the truth: Alfa Romeo wants you to visit them to do your oil change or reset your system for you.
It seems that after getting enough complaints about this, Alfa Romeo has changed this on the 2022 Stelvio models. You can now reset service information right in the Uconnect infotainment system. For owners of 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvios, however, it’s a little more complicated if you want to avoid going to the dealership.

Try various unconfirmed methods involving brake and/or gas pedals

If you want to, you could simply try all of the different methods found online that supposedly reset your “oil change required” message until one of them works. Note that these aren’t supposed to work to reset your maintenance schedule tracker in your infotainment “My Car” app. It’s only supposed to reset the “Oil Change Required” message that shows up on startup.
Here’s one such method:
  • Turn the car on, foot off the pedals, to turn on the electronics.
  • Push down on the gas pedal and hold it there.
  • While holding the gas pedal down, push the brake five times.
  • On the fifth push, still holding down the gas, hold the brake down.
  • After a few seconds, release both pedals.
  • Turn the car off and on again to check if the message is gone.
Here’s another:
  • Turn off the car, open the door, then close the door.
  • Press the Start button without pressing the brake to turn on the electronics.
  • Press the gas pedal to the floor five times
  • Turn the car off and back on again
If this doesn’t work, try doing it six times or three times instead, and just for good measure, try every method more than once, leaving one second between each press of the pedal. If it still doesn’t work, try doing it fast! Still not working? Try it with the brake pedal three times quickly.
Still no luck? Some people suggest holding the accelerator pedal while pressing the brake six times, with a one-second pause between each push. Alfa Romeo has intentionally made it so that there is a variety of methods for this between the different vehicles they offer and their various model years. They just want you to visit them. Why don’t you want to visit your dealership?

Hack your own car’s computer

If you’ve spent a few days pushing pedals down without managing to reset anything, and you’re not willing to bite the bullet and go to the dealership, you could take your DIY to the next level.
Buy an onboard diagnostics (OBD) scan tool, install
MultiEcuScan (MES)
software on your computer, and install a Security GateWay bypass plug on your Stelvio. This final piece of the setup will allow you to bypass the Security GateWay (SGW) module that prevents unauthorized mechanics (that means you) from accessing the 2019 Stelvio’s computer.
With the correct setup, you’ll be able to read and clear OBD codes and change things on your Stelvio that you’d normally need the dealership to handle. This method is also complicated, but
this video
and
this Stelvio Forum thread
might help.
In the MES software, you’ll be able to do a manual NEXT SERVICE RESET. This will reset both the instrument cluster message and the maintenance tracker in your “My Car” menu.
Don’t use this method if your vehicle is still under warranty. Just bring your car into the dealership.

How often does a 2019 Alfa Romeo need an oil change?

Alfa Romeo’s maintenance schedule for oil changes is once per year, and you should never drive more than 10,000 miles between changes. Try not to miss your oil change, or your ‘19 Stelvio risks some serious engine damage.
