background
As the primary minivan offered by Toyota, the 2017 Sienna is ideal for families or anyone else who has to comfortably transport groups of people. If you want to stay in good working order, though, you’ll have to keep an eye on the engine oil.
Cars can sometimes be needy, demanding little machines. As if it wasn’t enough that they seem to need expensive gas every other day, they also constantly require repairs, replacement parts, and top-offs for the various fluids that circulate through the vehicle. Keeping up with all of this can be a frustrating and time-consuming — not to mention expensive — ordeal.
One way to save money on car maintenance is to DIY, and the best place to start is an oil change.,

2017 Toyota Sienna engine oil capacity

Let’s start with the big question: how much engine oil does a 2017 Sienna need?
The 2017
Toyota Sienna's 3.5-liter V6
has an oil capacity of 5.7 quarts or 5.4 liters.
If, during your research, you come across the phrase oil displacement, it’s important to realize that this is not the same thing as oil capacity. Displacement refers to the actual amount of oil the engine’s cylinders need to work properly, while oil capacity is simply the amount of oil you need to use to perform a proper oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Toyota Sienna need?

Alright, now you know how much oil to put in your Sienna, but we still have to talk about the correct type of oil. Not all engines use the same kind of oil, so don’t buy anything just yet.
Toyota recommends using premium-grade 0W-20 oil for the 2017 Sienna. Furthermore, you should look for synthetic rather than conventional oil.
What is 0W-20 oil, though? You can break it down by looking at the letters and numbers. The numbers tell us about the oil’s viscosity (thickness), and the “W” represents winter. The 0 that comes before the “W” indicates that the oil maintains a low viscosity at extremely cold temperatures, and the 20 tells us that it stays thin at extremely hot temperatures, as well.
These stats tell us that the oil will perform well no matter the engine temperature, and the low viscosity will contribute to less wear and tear on your engine.
The owner's manula recommends
Genuine Toyota 0W-20 Motor Oil
. If you are unable to find Toyota brand motor oil, any other brand is also acceptable as long as it meets the same requirements and standards.

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Toyota Sienna

Now that you’re familiar with some of the finer details, it’s time to double check that you're actually due for an oil change
In case you were wondering, most mechanics suggest that you change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if you’re using conventional oil. But since the 2017 Sienna takes synthetic oil, you can wait a bit longer. Toyota's recommended maintenance schedule says you can plan on a senythetic oil change at intervals of 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
The main thing is to remember that it’s important to check your oil regularly. A good rule of thumb is to check once a month — or maybe every other time you fill up the car with gas. Here are some signs that your engine oil needs to be changed:
  • The engine starts making strange noises
  • You start to notice unusual smells, like oil, smoke, or burning
  • You observe any negative changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

It all comes down to this—you're rolling up your sleeves to
change the oil and filter
in your 2017 Sienna on your own But what does that entail?
For starters, you’ll need to get your tools together. You will need the following:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • Replacement oil filter
  • 7 quarts of synthetic 0W-20 engine oil
Start by letting your engine run for a few minutes, allowing it to reach a normal operating temperature. Then, turn off the engine and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Move under the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, letting the dirty oil leak into the drain pan
  • Take off the old oil filter and keep letting the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Fill up the engine with new oil and replace the fill cap
Make sure to use your dipstick to confirm you’ve put enough oil into the engine. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
After that, let the vehicle idle for a few minutes and keep an eye out for any leaks. When you see the
oil pressure light
on the dashboard switch off, you’re in the clear.
Never, never, never pour the dirty oil on the ground or throw it in the trash. Dirty oil is a major contaminant and you could even be fined for not disposing of it properly. Always place the dirty oil in a sealed container and bring it to the nearest recycling center.
