background
The 2019 Toyota Sienna provides a powerful engine for quick acceleration, along with a cavernous interior that’s comfortable for the whole family. But to keep up with this minivan’s performance, you’ll need to know its oil capacity, which is 5.6 quarts.
Maintenance costs are typically more expensive for minivans compared to other vehicles. If you own a 2019 Toyota Sienna, you can easily save on service expenses by performing your oil change at home. If you’ve lost your Toyota owner’s manual that details the proper oil type and capacity your particular model requires, look no further! In this handy guide, we’ll go over all the information you need to make your 2019 Toyota Sienna oil change a smooth operation.

2019 Toyota Sienna engine oil capacity

Let’s start with the question at hand: how much engine oil does a 2019 Toyota Sienna need?
The 2019 Toyota Sienna’s 3.5-liter V6 engine has an oil capacity of 5.6 quarts or 5.3 liters. Just make sure you don’t confuse your engine’s displacement (the 3.5-liter volume its cylinders take up) with its oil capacity—because you’ll end up with less engine oil than is required!

What kind of oil does a 2019 Toyota Sienna need?

Now that we’ve got your Sienna’s engine oil capacity covered—what about the oil type?
With a 3.5-liter V6 engine under your minivan’s hood, look for an SAE 0W-20 with an ILSAC (International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee) Certification Mark—preferably
Toyota Genuine Motor Oil
as recommended by the manufacturer. If you can’t find genuine oil, any high-quality SAE 0W-20 motor oil should work just fine for you.
So what exactly does SAE 0W-20 mean? SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers or the professional organization that codes oil viscosity. The single “W” stands for winter, while all the numbers in the oil grade relate to the oil’s viscosity or thickness.
The number 0 before the “W” implies that the oil has a low viscosity best for cold weather conditions, and the number 20 after the “W” tells us the oil viscosity at its normal operating temperature.

How often to change oil on a 2019 Toyota Sienna

Now that you know your 2010 Toyota Sienna’s oil capacity and type, you’re almost ready to
change your oil
! But wait a minute—when’s the last time you changed it?
Toyota recommends changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if you’re using conventional oil or every six months if you don’t drive very often. On the other hand, you can let more time go between oil changes if you’re using synthetic oil. In this case, Toyota recommends changing synthetic oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles to get the best performance out of your minivan.
It never hurts to make it a habit to check your engine oil regularly—about every month or so. Keep your eyes peeled for the following warning signs that signify that it’s time for an oil change in your Toyota Sienna:
  • Engine oil that looks dark brown or black, as opposed to clean oil that’s light brown or amber
  • Engine oil that feels coarse or gritty
  • Unusual noises from the engine
  • New odors that have a particularly strong oil, smoke, or burning smell
  • Changes in your minivan’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Have you determined that it’s about that time? If so, then locate all your materials! You’ll need a few tools, including a filter wrench, replacement filter, drain pan, and socket wrench. Oh, and we definitely can’t forget the star of the show: 5.6 quarts of SAE 0W-20 motor oil.
First, you’ll want to start your engine for about five minutes or less until your Sienna reaches normal operating temperature. That’s how long it normally takes when the weather is pleasant outside. Once your minivan has reached this point, turn the engine off and follow these instructions:
  • Open the hood and detach the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer located underneath the engine and allow the old oil into the drain pan
  • Detach the old oil filter and let the old oil continue to drain into the pan
  • Install the brand-new oil filter
  • Use a new washer to replace the oil drain bolt
  • Add new oil to the engine and attach the oil fill cap again
Once you have completed this process, turn your vehicle on once more and allow it to warm up for about 30 seconds—permitting the new motor oil to fill the new oil filter. Not sure if you’ve used enough engine oil? Then you can use your dipstick to assess and add more motor oil if necessary.
After you’ve determined that you have enough oil, let your engine run for a few more minutes and check for any possible leaks. When you’ve successfully changed out your oil, the
oil pressure light
on your dashboard will disappear.
But that’s not all! Don’t forget to also clean up afterward, too. You can place your dirty oil in a sealed container and drive it over to your local recycling center instead of just dumping it out on the ground or in your garbage bin.
