2017 Jeep Wrangler engine oil capacity

First things first: how much oil does a 2017 Jeep Wrangler’s engine need? This model of Jeep has a 3.6-liter V6 engine with an oil capacity of 6.0 quarts or 5.6 liters
Don’t be confused by the different liter measurements here—a 3.6-liter engine, the measurement of the
engine’s displacement
, means that the engine’s cylinders take up 3.6 liters of volume. A 5.6 liter, or 6.0-quart engine oil capacity tells you the amount of engine oil needed for that engine.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Jeep Wrangler need?

When heading to the store to get the aforementioned 6.0 quarts of motor oil, you must ensure your selection is the correct oil. Not all engine oils will work well in all engines
According to the 2017 Jeep Wrangler owner’s manual, the vehicle’s optimum engine oil is a premium 5W-20 synthetic motor oil
The oil grade tells us the viscosity levels of that oil in both cold and hot temperatures. The number 5 followed by the letter W, which stands for “winter”, indicates a low viscosity and thin oil at colder temperatures. The number 20 indicates a higher viscosity at hotter temperatures, although 20 is still a relatively thin-oil value.
Basically, you want to get an oil with these values because it will operate at the viscosity levels that work best with your engine. The other oil stipulation specified by the owner's manual is synthetic oil versus conventional motor oil. Synthetic motor oils have many benefits over conventional oils, including increased fuel and oil economy, more time between oil changes, and fewer harmful emissions.

How often to change oil on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler

Now you’re armed with the correct amount and kind of engine oil for your 2017 Jeep Wrangler and you’re ready for its next oil change…whenever that may be. Jeep recommends you change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of its
basic car maintenance schedule
That timeline may shift depending on your driving habits, like whether you’re exploring new trails every weekend or only taking a trip to the grocery store once a week. The former may want to stick to the 3,000-5,000 mile interval, but the latter can most likely get away with an interval of 7,500 to 10,000 miles, especially with synthetic oil.
No matter when your following oil change is, it's essential to check your engine's oil level and quality regularly. Once a month, pull out the oil dipstick to look at the color and consistency of your current oil. If it has something resembling an amber color and smooth, thin syrup-like consistency, it's in good shape. If it's dark brown to black in color and/or gritty in texture, it's time for an oil change.
Here are some other signs that will tell you when to break out the drain pan and new oil:
  • Unfamiliar sounds near the engine
  • A smoke or burning smell
  • Decreased engine performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

When the time arrives to
change the oil and filter
in your 2017 Jeep Wrangler, gather these materials before heading out to the garage:
  • Socket wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • New oil filter
  • 6 quarts of premium 5W-20 synthetic engine oil
Before starting the oil changing process, take your Jeep for a quick drive or let it idle for five to twenty minutes, depending on the weather. You should warm up the engine to its normal operating temperature prior to the oil change.
Once the engine is warm, turn your car off while parked on level ground,
open the hood of your car
, and continue with these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Position yourself under the engine with the socket wrench and drain pan. Use the socket wrench to remove the oil drain bolt and allow the old oil to drain into the pan
  • Grab your filter wrench and remove the old oil filter
  • Allow the old oil to drain, then install the new oil filter completely
  • Replace the oil drain bolt
  • Pour 6 quarts of new oil into the engine and replace the oil fill cap
After filling the engine and replacing the cap, turn your engine on and watch for any leaking. You’ll also want to check the oil dipstick to make sure your oil is at the appropriate level.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
If all is well, you're done! Just dispose of the old oil in a sealable container and drop it off at your local recycling and disposal center. Do not dump the oil on the ground or in a trashcan
