The industry rule of thumb dictates you should be changing your engine oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Synthetic oil blends can last between 7,500 and 10,000 before needing a change.

? When performing an oil change at home, before you get started, make sure you have the following materials on hand: - A socket wrench
- An oil drain pan
- A new oil filter and filter wrench
- 6 quarts of premium-grade 5W-20 motor oil
- A funnel and some old rags (optional)
It's best to change your car's oil when the engine is warm. If your car isn't already warmed up, you can let it run in the driveway for about five minutes. Then shut off the engine, pop the hood, lay out your materials, and let's get started:
- Locate and remove the oil fill cap under your car’s hood
- Get underneath your car and find the oil drain bolt, then use your socket wrench to loosen and remove the oil drain bolt and washer
- Position your oil drain pan under the drain bolt and allow the dirty engine oil to drain completely (this may take several minutes)
- Once the oil has drained, remove your old oil filter and install the new filter using your filter wrench
- Replace the oil drain bolt (and use a new washer!)
- Use your funnel to refill your engine oil tank
Before you clean up, double-check your engine oil level with the dipstick. You’ll know you’ve added the right amount if the oil line falls between the crosshatches on your dipstick.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
When done, turn your car back on and let it run for a couple of minutes, watching for any leaks. You should also reset your vehicle's oil light so you know when to change your oil again. Consult your owner's manual for instructions.
Last but not least: clean up. You must dispose of dirty engine oil properly by pouring it into a sealed container and taking it to your
local recycling center
