2017 Ford Expedition engine oil capacity

First things first: exactly how much engine oil does a 2017 Ford Expedition need?
The 3.5-liter Ford Expedition V6 engine has an oil capacity of 5.7 liters, or 6 quarts
Just don’t confuse your engine’s oil capacity—the amount of oil needed for every oil change—with your
engine displacement
, which is the 3.5-liter volume taken up by the cylinders. Oil capacity and engine displacement are not the same thing.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Ford Expedition need?

We’ve figured out how much engine oil your Expedition needs—but what about the oil type? Unfortunately, engine oils are not one-size-fits-all, so you can’t just buy the first bottle you see. To keep your 2017 Expedition in peak condition, Ford recommends using SAE 5W-30 engine oil.
What does SAE 5W-30 mean? SAE is the Society of Automotive Engineers, the group responsible for coding engine oil viscosity.
The numbers explain the viscosity, or thickness, of the oil, and the “W” refers to winter. The number 5 shows that the oil has a low viscosity at 0°F, and the number 30 means it stays fairly viscous at 212°F.
It’s important to look for an engine oil with this rating because it will have high performance in cold weather conditions. The low viscosity also means your engine will go through less wear and tear over time.
Can you use synthetic oil or conventional oil? Ford says that as long as it meets the model’s requirements, it’s safe to use a full synthetic or synthetic blend engine oil in a 2017 Expedition. If you can get your hands on quality synthetic engine oil, you can use it!
Ford specifically recommends using
Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
on your vehicle. But if you are unable to find Motorcraft, another brand will do just fine.

How often to change oil on a 2017 Ford Expedition

Now that you’re an expert on your 2017 Ford Expedition’s oil capacity and type, it’s time to
change your oil and filter
!
If you use conventional oil, Ford recommends changing the oil out every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Changing the oil every six months may be a better option to keep the oil clean if you don’t drive very much.
If you use synthetic oil, you have a little more leeway with your oil changes. Ford recommends changing out synthetic oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
Those are fairly large ranges, so it’s important to check the oil level regularly—about once a month—to make sure you’re changing the oil at the right time. Watch for these signs that you’re due for an oil change:
  • Changes in vehicle performance
  • Motor oil that feels gritty or coarse
  • Motor oil that is black or dark brown (dirty oil is the color of soda; clean oil is amber or light brown like tea)
  • New noises or sounds coming from the engine
  • Unfamiliar smells, particularly burning, oil, or smoke scents

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now it’s time for the oil change, so get your materials together. You will need a socket wrench, a filter wrench, a drain pan, a new filter, and six quarts of 5W-30 engine oil.
Begin by turning on the engine and letting it run until it reaches its usual operating temperature. This shouldn’t take longer than five minutes in normal weather, and the actual
oil change shouldn't take long
either. When it reaches operating temperature, turn it off, pop the hood, and follow these instructions:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from underneath the engine to drain the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the oil filter and let the rest of the old oil drain out
  • Insert the new oil filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine using the fresh oil and replace the oil fill cap
Check that you’ve added enough oil to the engine using the dipstick. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Run your vehicle for a few minutes once you’re done to check for any leaks. The
oil pressure light
on the dashboard should turn off if the oil change was successful.
Don’t forget to clean up afterward! The dirty oil needs to be transferred to a sealed container, then you need to take it to your local recycling plant. Never put it in the garbage or dump it out on the ground.
