2011 Honda CR-V engine oil capacity

Let’s start with the basics: How much engine oil does a 2011 Honda CR-V need?
The oil capacity of the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine on your 2011 CR-V is 4.4 quarts. The 2.4-liter volume spec is a measure of your engine’s displacement — that’s how much space the cylinders take up, while the oil capacity of the engine is the amount of oil needed for each oil change. An engine’s displacement is not the same thing as its oil capacity, so remember not to assume that those numbers mean the same thing.

What kind of oil does a 2011 Honda CR-V need?

We’ve established how much oil your CR-V needs, now let’s talk about what kind. Engine oils are definitely not all the same, and putting the wrong kind of oil in an engine can have utterly disastrous effects. Honda recommends that you use 0W-20 Honda Genuine Motor Oil, and it’s vital to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
The viscosity is reflected in the numbers you see in an oil’s grade, and the “W” stands for winter. The number 0 right before “W” tells us that this oil has got a low viscosity at much colder temperatures, and the 20 means that it’s also got an appropriate thickness when the temperature’s extremely hot.
An oil with these ratings will perform well under cold weather conditions, and its low viscosity means lower chances of wear and tear on your engine. Synthetic motor oil is fine, as long as it’s a premium grade 0W-20.
If you can’t find
Honda
brand oil, don’t panic. As long as you use a premium grade 0W-20 oil with the same specifications you should be good to go!

How often to change the oil on a 2011 Honda CR-V

Honda recommends changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you don’t drive a lot, changing your oil every six months is a good rule of thumb.
But every engine is different, and things don’t always work out in real life the way they do on paper. Check your oil level on a regular basis (every other refuel or once a month is a good range). Monitor for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Dark brown or black motor oil indicates the need for a change since light brown or amber indicates clean oil
  • Gritty or coarse motor oil
  • Foreign noises coming from the engine
  • Unfamiliar smells, especially anything that smells like burning, oil, or smoke
  • Differences in the way your vehicle performs

How to change your oil and oil filter

Enough numbers and stats: it’s time to change your oil!
First, gather a few
essential car tools and supplies
. To remove the old oil filter, you’ll need a drain pan, a socket wrench, and a filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter. Don’t forget to buy a replacement filter and 4.4 quarts of premium 0W-20 engine oil. The Honda manual states that the wrench needed to remove the CR-V’s oil filter can be purchased at a Honda dealership.
Start the process by running the engine for a while until it reaches normal operating temperature. Unless it’s really cold out, this should only take a few minutes. Once it’s up to temp, turn the engine off and wait a while for the oil to drain back down through the engine. Then:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Get under the engine and remove the washer and oil drain bolt, ensuring that the old oil is drained into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Using your new oil, refill the engine and replace the fill cap
Make sure that you’ve added enough oil to the engine by using your dipstick to check, but be careful not to overfill it. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Once you’re done, run your CR-V for a few minutes and watch for any leaks. If all is well, your dashboard’s oil pressure light should turn off. If
your car's oil pressure light is still on
, you may not to perform a manual reset. You can find steps for this in your owner's manual.
The last step: clean up. Please dispose of your used oil properly — don’t dump it out on the ground, down the drain, or put it in your garbage bin. Some auto parts stores will accept used motor oil, and in some areas curbside garbage haulers will take motor oil if it’s in a proper container and placed next to your bin. If these aren’t an option where you live, place the oil in a sealed container and bring it to a local recycling center.
