2015 Honda CR-V engine oil capacity

A vehicle’s engine oil capacity can vary depending on its engine type. Even within a certain vehicle make, different engines are sometimes used across generations, model years, and trim levels, so it’s important to verify that you’re looking at requirements for the correct engine type.
If you’re not sure what your vehicle’s oil capacity is, you can look it up in your owner’s manual.
The 2015 Honda CR-V oil capacity is 4.6 quarts, or about 4.4 liters, including the oil filter. This car has a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine.
At first glance, it might be easy to mistake the 2.4 liters for the engine’s oil capacity, but this actually refers to the engine’s displacement, which is the total volume the engine cylinders take up.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Honda CR-V need?

The 2015 Honda CR-V requires 0W-20 detergent oil. Using the correct type of motor oil in your vehicle is extremely important—using an incompatible motor oil could cause you to end up with substantial (and expensive) engine damage. It could also void your vehicle’s warranty.
Here’s a breakdown of what the Honda CR-V’s oil requirement means. The “0” refers to the oil’s thickness (or viscosity)at lower temperatures when the engine isn’t running. The “20” refers to the oil’s viscosity after the engine has reached higher operating temperatures. “Detergent oil” means there are certain additives to help reduce factors like sludge buildup and other wear and tear.
Does it matter which brand of engine oil you pick?
Honda
recommends Genuine Honda Motor Oil as a first choice, but another commercial brand is okay to use as long as it has an API certification seal on the label and the correct viscosity grade (0W-20).
As long as it’s API-certified and has the right viscosity grade, it’s okay to use synthetic oil, too.
Honda recommends against using any extra additives, which could counteract what the engine oil has been engineered to do and damage your engine or other parts.
As you search for the right engine oil for your Honda CR-V, here are a few options worth considering:
  • Honda’s top choice: Use
    Genuine Honda Motor Oil
if you’re looking to check all the boxes on Honda’s engine oil recommendations.
  • For high-mileage vehicles: If the miles on your CR-V’s engine are starting to add up, a high-mileage engine oil like
    this one from Valvoline
could help improve your engine’s performance, reduce leaks, and break down excess buildup of debris.
  • A synthetic engine oil option: If you’d prefer to drive longer distances between oil changes, consider using a fully synthetic engine oil like
    this one from Mobil 1

How often to change oil on a 2015 Honda CR-V

How often should you
change the oil
on a 2015 Honda CR-V?
The answer depends on what kind of oil you’re using and what driving conditions your CR-V has been exposed to. If driving in dusty environments or frequent traffic jams is pretty common for you, you might need to change your engine oil more often than you would otherwise.
Honda generally recommends changing your engine oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if you’re using conventional oil, or every 7,500 to 10,000 miles if you’re using synthetic oil.
Since the range between oil changes can vary pretty widely, it’s a good idea to check your oil regularly. Car experts commonly recommend doing so about once a month, or whenever you’re refueling your vehicle.
If you notice any of these signs, your 2015 Honda CR-V may be ready for its next oil change:
  • Engine oil has become dark brown or black
  • Engine oil has a grainy texture
  • Unusual new or
    loud noises
    are coming from your engine
  • Smoke, burning, or oil scents are coming from your engine
  • Worsened engine performance
  • Check engine indicator light has come on
  • Oil change and/or oil pressure indicator lights have come on

How to change your oil and oil filter

When your 2015 Honda CR-V is ready for an oil change, here are some of the supplies you’ll need:
  • Socket wrench
  • Filter wrench (a tool used for removing old oil filters)
  • New washer for the drain bolt
  • New oil filter
  • New engine oil
  • Drain pan
  • Rubber gloves
  • Towel(s) for clean-up
Once you have everything you need, you can begin by starting your engine and letting it run for a few minutes. This will warm up the engine oil and make it easier to drain. Then, you’re ready to lift your CR-V’s hood and begin:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Underneath your car, remove the drain bolt and washer, allowing the old engine oil to empty into the drain pan
  • As the oil continues draining, remove the old oil filter
  • Install the new oil filter following the package instructions
  • Once the oil’s finished draining, replace the drain bolt with the new washer and tighten it to 30 lb-ft
  • Return to the hood of your car and add fresh engine oil until it reaches the proper level (which you can check with your dipstick)
  • Replace the engine oil fill cap
Once you’re finished, let your engine run for a few minutes again, checking for any leaks, then turn it off and check your engine oil one last time, adding more as needed. Repeat until the engine oil is at the correct level.
Then, there’s just one more step! Engine oil is an environmentally hazardous material, so you can’t just dispose of used engine oil by pouring it down the drain or dumping it on the ground.
Many cities, as well as certain car repair shops and dealerships, have drop-off locations where you can dispose of old oil—just be sure to note their requirements before you do so.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
