Where is the hood release on a 2006 Mini Cooper?

In the 2006 Mini Cooper, you can find the hood release lever on the passenger’s side underneath the glovebox.
This handle can be a little tricky to find! If you look hard, though, you’ll see a small, black lever with an icon of a car with a popped hood near the doorframe on the passenger’s side.
The placement of the hood latch release is especially tricky on early Mini Cooper models—before 2009, the levers were all located on the passenger’s side. Since manyvehicle manufacturers place this lever on the driver’s side, it can be easy to overlook.

How to open the hood on a 2006 Mini Cooper

Once you pull the hood release lever, it’s very simple to
open the hood of your car
. Here’s how to do it:
  1. Pull the hood release lever. You should hear a pop as the hood comes unlatched from the vehicle’s frame.
  2. Walk to the front of the car and stand facing the hood. Now, you’ll need to pull an additional safety latch to fully release the hood.
  3. Reach your hand into the space under the hood on the right-hand side and feel around for the safety latch.
  4. Use your fingers to push up on the safety latch and lift the hood. You should be able to lift the hood fully.
  5. If you plan to do some work under the hood, prop it open with the metal bar located on the left-hand side.
Now that your hood is open, you’ll have access to your engine, among other things, to complete any maintenance or repairs that your vehicle might need.

What if the hood release latch doesn’t work?

Unfortunately, sometimes things don’t go according to plan. If you followed our directions to a T and you’re still wondering how to pop your hood, it’s possible that the hood release latch cable is broken
While many vehicles have a front grill that allows you to access the hood release latch from the exterior, Mini Cooper grilles are too intricate to allow for this kind of solution. Instead, you can try to access and manually pull the hood release cable from behind your dashboard. However, this will require a lot of time and complicated procedures that could damage your vehicle, so it’s recommended that you visit your local mechanic if you run into this issue.

How to repair the 2006 Mini Cooper hood release

If you do find yourself with a broken hood release, repairs could cost anywhere from $190 to $225
A lot of that cost is labor fees, so you might be tempted to find an inexperienced mechanic who charges less per hour. However, keep in mind that this type of repair can be very complicated, so you’ll want the best person for the job—even if that means paying a little extra.
There are also a couple of ways that your insurance might cover this repair. If you have
OEM coverage
on your car insurance policy, for example, the parts for this repair will be covered by your insurance. This means that you should get your vehicle repaired at a Mini dealership, if possible.
Otherwise, the only way this type of repair might get covered by your insurance is in the event of an accident. If your hood release was caused by a fender bender and you have
collision coverage
, this repair will be paid for by your insurer. Score!
