How to register a car in Mississippi

Registering a vehicle in Mississippi is fairly simple. You’ll need to head to your

local county tax collector’s office

with your vehicle title, valid driver’s license, vehicle mileage, and payment for the registration fee.

If you just moved to Mississippi

If you’ve just moved to Mississippi, you’ve got 30 days to apply for a Mississippi vehicle registration. If you fail to meet this deadline, you could face a $250 fine.

To complete your registration, bring the following to your county tax collector’s office:

Whether you’re new to Mississippi or an established resident, if you buy a new vehicle from a dealership, the dealer will submit your title and registration forms for you. How to renew your Mississippi vehicle registration

Mississippi requires vehicle owners to renew their registrations annually. Vehicle safety and emissions inspections are not required.

Usually, the Mississippi Department of Revenue (MS DOR) will send you a registration renewal notice by mail before your current registration expires. When you receive this notice, many counties allow for online renewal, but some require that you mail in your renewal. You may also renew your registration in person at your local MS DOR office.

If you do not receive a renewal notice, you must renew your registration by going in person to your local MS DOR office.

You must renew your MS vehicle registration before your current registration expires to avoid a late fee. Late registration penalties are charged as a percentage of your overall renewal fee. If your renewal is 15 days late, you will be charged a 5% fee. For each additional 30 days of delinquency, you will be charged an additional 5%, up to a 25% maximum late fee.

You have three options for renewing your Mississippi registration: by mail, in person, and (for some counties) online. The state provides a

list of those counties

that allow you to complete your online registration through the county website or motor vehicle e-services. To complete your online registration, be sure to follow all instructions provided on-screen. Payment for online renewal must be submitted by credit or debit card, and additional third-party convenience fees may apply.

To renew your registration by mail, simply send your renewal notice to the address specified on the notice along with a check or money order for the renewal fee, which will be printed on your notice.

To complete your renewal in person, bring your renewal notice or your current registration to your local Mississippi DMV office along with payment for your renewal fee.

If you complete your registration online or via mail, you should expect to receive your new registration and stickers within 10 business days. If you complete your renewal in person, you will receive them at the time of registration.

How to replace a lost registration sticker or license plate

Nobody’s perfect, but if you happen to misplace your registration decal or license tags, or if either is stolen, you must replace them. You have two options for processing a request for replacement:

Application for Replacement Tag and/or Decal (Form 76-903)

Take the completed Form 76-903 to your local county tax collector’s office.

Whichever method you choose, you will need to head to your county tax collector’s office both to pay the $10 duplicate tag fee and/or $2.50 duplicate decal fee and to pick up the duplicates themselves.
