background
If you bought an out-of-state car and want to register it in Wyoming, you must register it in person at your local county treasurer’s office. The state does not allow you to mail or electronically submit your registration.
Anytime you buy a vehicle, it helps to read up on the registration requirements. This is especially useful if you’re buying a car from a different state than the one where you’re a resident. In Wyoming, you’ve got 30 days to register your out-of-state vehicle.
Don’t worry!

How to buy a car out of state as a Wyoming resident

The clock is ticking as soon as you drive your new out-of-state car into Wyoming—you’ve got just 30 days to title and register the vehicle with the state. Instead of heading to a Department of Transportation office, you’ll need to go to your local county treasurer's office in the county seat of the county you live in.
First, you’ll have to get the car inspected by local law enforcement. They’ll give you a
Title and Vehicle Inspection Number (VIN) form
. Pay them a $10 inspection fee, and law enforcement will fill out the bottom of the form.
Complete the top of the Title and VIN application and take it to the county treasurer's office along with:
  • The vehicle title
  • Out-of-state car registration
  • Proof of insurance
  • The annual county registration fee (these are property taxes based on the price listed on the car’s title and the year of service rate)
  • $30 for the state registration fee
Bring the loan agreement with your lender if you’re financing the car and have the title.
After you’ve submitted the forms and have paid the fees, you’ll be issued a Wyoming title and registration.
Note that if you’re buying an out-of-state car as a Wyomingite, handle the old plates on the car according to the laws of that state. Some states require that you return them to the Department of Motor Vehicles or destroy them.

How to buy a car in Wyoming if you live out of state

We’ve covered what to do if you’re a Wyomingite buying a car in another state, but what do you do if you live out of state and want to buy a car in Wyoming? For the most part, the process is similar in your state. You’ll typically need to:
  • Get a valid bill of sale for buying the car (check if your state requires a notary stamp on the bill of sale)
  • Take the bill of sale to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Be prepared to show your photo ID, proof of insurance, proof of residency, or odometer disclosure
  • Fill out the application to register the car in your state of residency
Pay the registration fee along with the local sales tax or the difference between the sales tax in Wyoming and your home state.
You must return the Wyoming plates to the Wyoming Department of Transportation, so look into getting temporary plates for the car ride back to your home state.

What if I don’t have a physical title?

Wyoming asks for the vehicle title, but if you don’t have it, you might still be able to register the car—bring in the VIN inspection form, your current out-of-state registration, and proof of insurance.
If you’d rather get the title, contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state where you bought the car and request a physical copy. Ask the lienholder to make the request if you’re financing the vehicle.
If you don’t have the title or current out-of-state registration, you won’t be able to register the vehicle. Don’t hesitate to call the local County Clerk’s office for help and advice.

Tips for buying a vehicle out of state

Sometimes buying a car from out of state just makes sense! Maybe you found a better deal on the car of your dreams, or you’ve got more cars to choose from. When shopping around, keep these smart tips in mind:
  • Get the vehicle history report. Do not skip this if you’re getting a used car from a private seller.
    CARFAX
and other services give vehicle history reports, so you can see if the car has been in any accidents or has other issues.
  • Make a vehicle inspection appointment at home. Every state has different vehicle requirements, and your new car has to meet them! Read up on
    Wyoming’s car inspection requirements
    here.
  • Get an emissions test if your home state requires one. Although Wyoming doesn’t require
    emissions testing
, the state where you’re registering and driving your vehicle might require one.
  • Read up on your home state’s vehicle sales tax laws. Remember, you pay taxes to the state where you register and drive the car, not the state where you purchase it.
  • Check that you have car insurance before you leave the dealership. You’ve got to have insurance before you drive the car off the lot, especially if you’re driving it back to your home state. Don’t worry—you can get temporary insurance to meet
    Wyoming’s minimum requirements
