How much does GMC car insurance cost?

If you favor rough and tough, you can’t go wrong with a GMC. General Motors has been producing some of America’s best-selling trucks for more than a century—and while they may have started basic, the 2023 lineup can get downright luxurious. Getting behind the wheel of a GMC makes sense for those looking for maximum functionality out of their vehicle. But when it comes to maximum savings, you won’t always find them with GMC car insurance.
Insurance rates are based on the kind of vehicle you drive, but factors such as your age, location, driving history, and coverage needs also play into rates. That’s why there’s no such thing as an ‘average’
auto insurance quote
.  The only way to truly understand how much your car insurance will cost is to compare car insurance quotes for your own driver profile.

How to find the cheapest GMC Car Insurance Quotes

The insurance cost for a GMC vehicle will depend on the specific model, model year, and features, but in general, insurance for GMC trucks and SUVs is about the middle of the road. GMC is known for producing reliable and durable vehicles with ample safety features, which can help to lower insurance costs—but the driver profile also influences how much you’ll pay.
But here to help you is Jerry Insurance Agency—the nation’s leading online insurance broker that compares insurance quotes from 50+ top providers in seconds to find the best rate for your GMC. It’s quick, simple, and hassle-free—no phone calls, emails, or sales pitches.
Check out some actual GMC car insurance quotes found by Jerry.

Best car insurance companies for GMC drivers

Shopping for auto insurance
can be overwhelming. With dozens of insurance providers to choose from and rates that span in price, how do you know what’s right? Finding one right for you and your vehicle is important.
But there’s a catch—no company will offer every GMC driver the cheapest rate. Car insurance rates are influenced by the car you drive and personal factors such as age, driving record, and location. As such, every driver will receive unique quotes from every provider.
At Jerry, we want to make insurance shopping easy, so we conducted the largest car insurance survey in the nation to help GMC drivers find the best insurance prices. We spoke to more than 16,000 policyholders about their insurance providers.
Here’s how GMC drivers rate some of the top insurance companies.

How'd we get these scores?

Jerry's experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.

Are GMCs more expensive to insure?

The cost to insure a GMC depends on the car—model, model year, vehicle features—as well as the driver’s profile—age, driving history, location, coverage needs, insurance history, and more.
GMCs are generally known for their durability and reliability and aren’t necessarily more expensive to insure than other vehicles, but some GMCs have features that may increase insurance rates.
Newer and more expensive GMC models will have higher insurance costs than older models with fewer features. You'll also pay more if you have higher coverage needs or a bad driving record.
Compared to the average cost of other cars, GMCs cost 13% less to insure.

Cheapest GMCs to insure

If you want to save money on insurance costs, opting for the fully-loaded top-tier models likely won’t do it. The higher the trim level, the more expensive insurance will be. In general, choosing the base-level GMC models without optional packages and features will help to reduce insurance costs.
The cheapest GMC model to insure is the 2016 GMC Yukon, with an average monthly premium of $20 for state minimum coverage and an average of $188 for full coverage.

Most expensive GMCs to insure

GMC vehicles run across the spectrum when it comes to luxury. The base-level GMC Terrain comes with a fraction of the features of the GMC Yukon Denali Limited. The model you choose—and its price, safety ratings, and features—can make a huge difference to your monthly insurance payments.
The most expensive GMC model to insure is the 2021 GMC Terrain, with an average monthly premium of $176 for state minimum coverage and an average of $181 for full coverage.
Remember that while your model and trim level greatly influence car insurance rates, personal factors like age, driving record, insurance and claim history, location, and coverage needs are also important considerations.
So, if you want to save money on car insurance, shopping around and comparing quotes from several providers can help ensure you’re not overpaying.

What factors affect GMC car insurance rates?

Insurers consider many factors when
calculating car insurance rates
. Here are some factors that tend to affect premiums:
  • Vehicle cost: The more expensive your vehicle is, the more expensive insurance coverage will be—especially if you’re driving a luxury, high-performance, or sports car.
  • Vehicle age: Newer models typically cost more to insure due to newer technology and a higher repair and replacement cost.
  • Vehicle safety features: GMCs have good safety ratings, and newer models equipped with GMC Pro Safety Plus may see lower car insurance rates.
  • Your age: Drivers under 25—especially drivers 16 to 19—pay the highest insurance rates due to limited driving experience. Senior drivers over 70 also pay high rates.
  • Your driving record and claims history: Auto insurance companies look at your accident record to determine your risk level and typically reward good drivers with lower insurance rates (and discounts!).
  • Credit history: Some insurers use your credit score (FICO score) to determine your risk level as a customer. Drivers with good credit history typically have lower insurance rates.
  • Coverage: Purchasing minimum coverage is less expensive than a full coverage insurance policy.
Here are some specific factors that impact auto insurance rates for GMCs:
  • Safety features: Most GMC vehicles are equipped with GMC safety features like blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert, and more. All of these features help to lower insurance rates for good drivers.
  • Engine: GMC doesn’t produce any high-performance vehicles, but models with larger engines, such as the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 or the GMC Canyon Denali, may have higher insurance rates due to a higher risk of accidents.

GMC insurance cost for young drivers

Teen drivers
under 25—especially those 16 to 19—have some of the highest insurance rates of any age bracket due to limited driving experience and a higher risk of being involved in an accident. After 25, drivers have more experience and should see lower insurance rates.
Although a full coverage car insurance policy may cost more upfront, it can help protect new and teen drivers—especially those with a new vehicle—against the costs associated with accidents.
Check out the table below to see how Jerry helped young GMC drivers find affordable car insurance.

GMC insurance cost for senior drivers

Seniors over 70 also see high insurance rates. Age increases susceptibility to injury and mortality following a car crash, while slower reflexes also increase the likelihood of being in a car crash. Both of these factors increase insurers' risk.
But
car insurance rates for seniors
can still be affordable—and Jerry can help seniors GMC drivers find the coverage they need at the best rate.

GMC insurance cost for drivers with driving violations

Driving violations can quickly increase insurance costs upon renewal, and maintaining a
clean driving record
is one of the easiest ways to lower car insurance payments.
GMC drivers with a history of at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, and other driving violations are classified as
high-risk drivers
by insurers, leading to high insurance payments.

Cheapest car insurance for GMC drivers with speeding ticket

Having a single speeding ticket on your record won’t break the bank for insurance, but multiple offenses or a
reckless driving
charge on your record could. Drivers with a speeding ticket on their record see an increase in insurance rates compared to drivers with a clean record.
GMC drivers with a speeding ticket can still find savings—and Jerry can help!

How can I lower the cost of my GMC car insurance?

GMCs might have lower insurance rates than others, but depending on your vehicle and driving profile, it can still be pricey. Here are some tips to help reduce monthly insurance payments without sacrificing coverage:
  1. Shop around
: Insurance rates aren’t consistent between carriers—and some insurers offer different discounts—so shopping around and comparing quotes from at least three providers can help you find the right coverage at the lowest price.
  2. Ask about discounts: Many insurance providers offer various
    car insurance discounts
, such as a safe driver discount, bundling policies, or installing safety features in your GMC. Check with your insurer to see what discounts are available to you.
  3. Choose the right coverage: You’ll need insurance that meets your state’s minimum requirements, but consider your budget when choosing additional coverage. For example, if you have an older GMC, you may not need as much coverage as someone with a brand-new GMC.
  4. Increase your deductible: Your deductible is the amount you’ll pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in. A higher deductible can reduce your monthly payments, but you’ll need to be sure you can cover your deductible if you’re involved in an accident.
  5. Maintain a
    clean driving record
: Your driving record is a significant factor in calculating your GMC insurance rates. You may qualify for lower rates if you maintain a clean driving record with no accidents or driving violations.
  6. Check insurance rates before you buy: Some GMC models are more expensive to insure than others. When shopping for a car, inquire about insurance rates before you buy.
  7. Bundle your policies:
Bundle your auto with home insurance
    for a discount.
  8. Consider usage-based insurance: Some insurers offer insurance programs that track your driving habits and adjust your monthly payments accordingly. This is a great option if you don’t drive your GMC frequently.

FAQs

The average cost of car insurance for a GMC Yukon is $1,068 a year, but exact rates vary based on the model/trim level and driver profile.
GMC Sierras aren’t extraordinarily expensive to insure, but that largely depends on the trim level and your driving profile. The entry-level Sierra 1500 has an MSRP of around $54,000, while the top-tier Denali can run well over $65,000. Because the value of your vehicle influences insurance costs, a more expensive car with more features will cost more to insure.
Sierra 1500 drivers pay about $150 per month for full coverage and $84 per month for minimum state insurance.
The average insurance rate for a GMC Acadia is $170 per month for full coverage and $91 per month for state minimum insurance.
That said, how much you pay for insurance has a lot to do with your age, driving record, insurance and claim history, location, coverage needs, and more. A middle-aged driver with a clean driving record could pay significantly less for insurance on a GMC Acadia than a young driver with an at-fault accident.
Finding an affordable rate for GC Sierra car insurance can be tricky, but the best way to get the best price for car insurance is to shop around and compare quotes from multiple insurance providers before settling.
There are other ways to reduce your monthly payments, too, including asking about discounts, increasing your credit score, reducing unnecessary coverage, and bundling your auto and home insurance.

Methodology

The Insurance Research Team analyzes insurance products and services to drive insights and help consumers make informed purchase decisions.
Insurance research: We analyzed over 25 million car insurance quotes; conducted the largest insurance shopping survey (over 15,000 customers surveyed and 85 carriers reviewed in the past 18 months).
We surveyed insurance policyholders for their experience with their insurers in the following areas: (1) insurance cost (2) customer service (3) insurance buying experience (4) insurance renewal experience (5) claim experience. In addition, we asked people what they like about their insurers and what areas in which their insurers could improve. The driver characteristics used in calculating average rates for auto insurance include: single driver, single car, currently insured, clean driving record.
For the quotes and sold policies included in this article, please note that personal information has been hidden. Not all customers find savings.
