background
AAA’s good student discount can save drivers up to 14% off the cost of their policy when they earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher in high school or college.
Statistics surrounding the high risk of young drivers can make it difficult for drivers under the age of 25 to find affordable car insurance. But there is a way to avoid the risky driver stigma and inevitably expensive insurance policies: get good grades! That’s right—studies have shown that students with good grades tend to be safer drivers, and insurance providers will offer discounts to those who fall in that category.

How to get AAA’s good student discount

With AAA’s good student discount, performing well in school could save you up to 14% on your insurance premiums. AAA offers this discount to full-time students who are enrolled in high school or college and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher—about a B average.

How to qualify

In order to qualify for a good student discount with AAA, you must:
  • Be enrolled in full-time high school or university
  • Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
As such, if you’re only taking two or three classes, you will not qualify for the discount.
AAA will need to verify your GPA through a submitted transcript. If you’re unable to provide a transcript, you may need to take a national standardized test, like the SAT or ACT, to prove your academic standing.

How long does AAA’s good student discount last?

You can qualify for AAA’s good student discount so long as you continue to meet both requirements. If your grades drop or you’re no longer a full-time student, AAA can withdraw the discount.

Why do auto insurers offer good student discounts?

It might seem odd that auto insurance companies offer discounts to certain drivers based on their academic performance. What do good grades have to do with accident risk, anyway? As it turns out, there is some solid reasoning behind AAA’s good student discount.
Students and young drivers pay the highest rates for car insurance in the country due to their lack of driving experience, and in turn, heightened risk for collisions on the road.
But when a driver has demonstrated academic responsibility (i.e., good grades), it shows that they have the willingness to meet deadlines and adhere to rules and expectations, thereby reducing their risk of collisions on the road.
In this way, good students are a safe bet for insurance companies who want policyholders with auto and financial responsibility.

The best AAA car insurance discounts for students

While a good student discount can save you up to 14% on your premium, most drivers end up saving less than that. That’s because other factors, like your driving history, are taken into consideration. Luckily, there are other auto insurance discounts and savings programs available that can boost your savings.

Student away at school discount

If you or a driver on your AAA policy spends a good portion of the year away at school and only drives the covered car on certain occasions, you may be able to save on your policy. With AAA’s student away or distant student discount, students on a policy who are away at school over 100 miles from home without a car can save up to 46.7% on their rate!

Driver training discount

Young drivers who complete an AAA-approved driver training course can qualify for a driver training discount. With this discount, young drivers can save up to 4.7% on their policy.

Multiple car and multiple policy discounts

If there’s a teen driver or student on your policy, chances are you have multiple cars to insure, or multiple policies to keep track of. If you’re also paying for homeowners, renters, or life insurance, AAA has discounts to lower your rates.
With a multi-car discount, you can save up to 25% on your auto insurance premiums when you insure two or more vehicles. Keep in mind that only certain coverages are eligible for this discount, and covered cars must be regularly driven by policyholders.
With a multi-policy discount, you can save up to 15% when you bundle your auto and homeowners insurance, up to 11% when you bundle auto and condo insurance, up to 3% when you bundle auto and renters, and up to 19% when you bundle home and life insurance.

Usage-based discounts

You can also save money when you use the AAA mobile app to track your driving habits. Using features like AAADriver or AAA Onboard on the app, your driving habits will be monitored, including your driving speed, the time of day you drive, mobile phone distractions, and levels of drowsiness.
While it may sound like a lot, you’ll get a discount of 5% simply for signing up, and you can save an additional 10% if all members of the auto insurance policy enroll. Finally, you can earn up to 25% off your policy based on your safe driving habits.

Another discount program that young drivers can qualify for with AAA is the
