Originally designed as an economical option for the mass market, the two-door hatchback was produced from 1975 to 1980. Unfortunately, like many models of this era, emissions regulations restricted automakers and offerings were less than impressive. Weighing over 3,000 lbs, HotCars
reports that the AMC Pacer was slow. Although it was available with a 5.0-liter V8, the 1976 Wayne’s World car was equipped with the base inline-6 engine. A three-speed automatic transmission with no overdrive was standard, which hurt the car’s fuel economy.
Its wide track was an innovative feature that helped to maximize interior space on a compact vehicle. But buyers were thwarted by the car’s unusual styling and rear-wheel drive platform.
