In the Fast and Furious franchise, the filmmakers drafted real show cars for on-screen duty, including Han’s
Mazda
RX-7. Originally built by Veilside to showcase its Fortune wide-body kit, the car was purchased after being spotted at the Tokyo Auto Salon, an annual auto show in Japan. While it was painted orange for filming, the rest of its features—such as the modified 13B rotary engine, HKS turbocharger, and titanium exhaust system—were left as they were found.
Along with the show car, there were several traditional movie cars on the set. The production team built nine RX-7s to use for stunts. Only two cars survived the entirety of filming and were sent back to Japan.
The Mazda RX-7 was produced from 1978 to 2002 and remained a popular sports car when it was on the market, independent of hit action films. With a lightweight Wankel rotary engine and an option for 13B with electronic fuel injection, it’s a powerful car that’s also comfortable, sleek, and classic.
The RX-7 made Car and Driver magazine’s “10 Best” list five times, and more than 800,000 models were manufactured over its lifetime.
