Ford
made some big moves in the last two years.
While competitors like Mazda and Chevy focused on riding out the success of established nameplates, Ford took chances, turning the Mustang into an electric SUV, reviving the small truck segment with the new Maverick, and electrifying the bestselling F-150.
For Ford, the risk paid off in the form of
awards
from
Kelley Blue Book
(KBB) for the second year in a row, with the blue oval taking four of the six North American Car of the Year awards.
Even before it went electric, the F-150 was awarded the truck of the year in 2021, followed by the Maverick for 2022. The Mustang Mach-E took the SUV prize home last year, and its sibling—the new Ford Bronco—followed suit for 2022.

What made these Fords stand out for KBB?

At first glance, it might seem like the Fords that took home KBB hardware in 2021 and 2022 got to the top based on hype and brand recognition. The Mustang Mach-E, Maverick, and Bronco made quite a splash when were revealed, and the F-150 rarely disappoints.
But all of them definitely earned their stripes. With the Mach-E, KBB says Ford offered speed, space, and an impressive battery range at an affordable price. The upgraded F-150 also bested its competition in power, payload, towing capacity, and interior tech and configurations.
Ford’s winners from the 2022 model year were no different. The revived Bronco dazzled KBB with its old-meets-new design and terrain management system. The Maverick brought the small truck segment back, but it won truck of the year for its customizability and low starting price.

Other KBB Car of the Year winners

Ford clearly did well in 2021 and 2022, according to KBB. But the company didn’t completely sweep the publication’s annual awards. In both years, two other car brands managed to take the actual ‘Car of the Year’ trophy home.
The winner in 2021 was Hyundai Elantra. Its long list of standard features and jaw-dropping 43 mpg fuel efficiency helped it surpass its rivals. On top of that, KBB loved its new look.
But in 2022, the Elantra was outdone by the new and refined Honda Civic. Honda chose to class-up the classic and was rewarded for the move. The car also won KBB’s Best Buy Award, thanks to its under-$22,000 starting price.

. Premiums for cars tend to be lower than they are for SUVs or pickup trucks. But there are other factors affecting policy prices for Ford’s winning models, as well.
For one thing, the Mach-E’s electric powertrain will most likely make its premiums higher than other SUVs. But on a more positive note, the Maverick’s car-like size will likely make it cheaper to insure than other pickups. In the end, it all comes down to your provider.
