Dodge and Alfa Romeo Are Bickering Over the Dodge Hornet

We explain why Dodge and Alfa Romeo are at odds over the Dodge Hornet—an all-new Dodge model that seems to copy the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

background
Stellantis is a massive company—one that owns a host of smaller, better-known names like
Dodge
or Alfa Romeo. But like siblings often will, these two particular child companies are bickering, this time over the Dodge Hornet. While the rest of us are eagerly awaiting the Hornet’s debut, Alfa Romeo is less than thrilled at the thought of having to compete with what it views as a knockoff of the Alfa Romeo Tonale.

What’s the big deal with the Dodge Hornet?

Motor1
explains that Alfa Romeo is less than pleased with the recent announcement, even though it’s Dodge’s first new vehicle in more than a decade. The reasons aren’t a secret—Dodge’s new car isn’t a new car at all. It’s essentially the Alfa Romeo Tonale with a Dodge emblem on the front.
Even though Alfa Romeo and Dodge are separate brands within a single company, their vehicles are now being pitted against each other. It’s a win-win scenario for Stellantis, but maybe not for Alfa Romeo.

How will the Dodge Hornet affect Alfa Romeo’s sales numbers?

Dodge was likely able to point out that the Dodge Hornet will be priced around $30,000, which is more than $10,000 cheaper than the Alfa Romeo Tonale. However, this seems to be one of the main issues, considering Alfa Romeo wants to sell the Tonale in the U.S.
Now, it would have to compete directly against the Dodge Hornet. With a cheaper option of the same car but with different branding, customers and dealership salespeople are likely to defer to the Hornet over the Tonale.
Motor1 quoted an anonymous source at Alfa Romeo as stating “Dodge took advantage of the [Tonale] to make a compliance car—their Aston Martin Cygnet moment, if you will. Suffice it to say internal politics won the day, and Dodge needed to up their CAFE numbers, so Hornet was born.”

What can we expect from the Dodge Hornet?

Dodge has never been a company to sacrifice power over practicality, so having a moderately priced crossover beyond the Dodge Dart is somewhat of a surprising move. So far, Dodge has received 14,000 preorders for the Dodge Hornet, which is promising. It offers a hybrid powertrain in the R/T option with an impressive 0-60 time of about six seconds, thanks to its 285 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.
