background
The automotive world has been buzzing since it was recently confirmed that the much-anticipated
Dodge
Hornet was officially in the works. Across the board, automakers are facing supply chain issues and delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Dodge Hornet is no exception.
Because of this, there’s no official date set for the reveal just yet, but Dodge is targeting August during the company’s annual Speed Week.
Detroit Free Press
reported that executives at Dodge have been tight-lipped when it comes to sharing details on the new compact SUV, but gave away one major clue: a shared architecture with a sporty Italian SUV that debuted in February, the Alfa Romero Tonale
You still can’t get your hands on one just yet though—both the Hornet and the Tonale won’t be available in the U.S. until 2023

Alfa Romeo and Dodge both share a racing heritage

While Alfa Romeo creates commercial passenger vehicles like the Tonale, the brand is perhaps better known for its history in racing including Grand Prix motor racing, Formula One, touring car racing, and rallies.
Previous models of the Hornet share a similar story, as the original Hudson Hornet was a popular muscle car that dominated NASCAR in the 1950s. While the Alfa Romero brand has an impressive history of producing fast and stylish vehicles, it has struggled to compete with leading luxury brands.

What can we expect from the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale?

In its long tenure, Alfa Romeo also developed a reputation for quality issues, even after an acquisition by Fiat in 1986. The introduction of models like the Tonale are an attempt to not only breakthrough to a more mainstream audience, but to also revitalize the bran
The Tonale, while still being an Italian-made luxury brand SUV, does feature a lower price tag than the rest of its lineup. A final price hasn’t been officially announced, but is likely to be in the mid-$30,000 range. The 2023 Tonale will also come with a hybrid version—a first for Alfa Romeo.

The first all-electric Stellantis brand

As a luxury brand, Alfa Romeo presents a lot of potential in its segment but is consistently outsold by competitors by quite a wide margin. Mercedes, for example, sells more cars in a month in the U.S. than Alfa sold in all of 2021.
This is perhaps why Stellantis is making another big push for the brand as the first Stellantis brand to go all EV in North America.
The base drivetrain of the Tonale is a 256-hp four-cylinder engine linked to a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the top model will be a 276-hp plug-in hybrid that uses a 1.3L turbocharged engine to power the front wheels and has an electric rear axle.
It will be capable of over 30 miles on solely-electric power and a 600-mile combined gas and battery range. Engineers at Alfa boast that “electrification according to Alfa Romeo” will “reinvent sportiness for the 21st century.”
