Is the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R Worth Its $100,000 Price Tag?

Ford went all-out with its latest rendition of the F-150 Raptor. But will the upgrades prove to be enough to justify the mile-high asking price?

background
New vehicles are shockingly expensive this year, but $100,000 for a factory
pickup truck
is a high price under any circumstances. That hasn’t stopped Ford from asking for over $107,000 for the F-150 Raptor R, though.
The automaker threw everything it could in the off-road-ready trim, but the most impressive upgrade in the Raptor R can be found under the hood. The truck is powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that offers a whopping 700 horsepower.

2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R—an off-road beast of a truck

High-priced pickup trucks aren’t a new thing, but in Ford’s lineup, the F-150 Raptor R takes the cake. At $107,350, it’s the most
expensive truck
the company sells and costs nearly $37,500 more than the entry-level Raptor.
The key price-hiker is the truck’s V8 engine, which happens to be the same powertrain found in the $74,555 Mustang Shelby GT500.
Kelley Blue Book
(KBB) says Ford retuned it for the Raptor’s specific needs, increasing the air intake and deepening the oil pan to keep the engine lubricated through rough terrain.
Ford focused on the details when it came to the truck’s design, decking it out with its own “R”-badges and upping the quality of all its features. Even the carbon fiber interior trimming, with its “tri-axial weave”  is unique to the truck.

The F-150 Raptor R has some steep competition

$107,350 is a lot for any pickup truck, but the Ford F-150 Raptor R isn’t alone in the high-priced four-wheeler segment. Chevy, GMC, and Ram all have models with +$70,000 starting prices.
In terms of capability, the closest rival to the Raptor R from outside Ford’s lineup is the Ram 1500 TRX. The truck’s highest trim starts at nearly $77,000, but with all the possible upgrades added,
Motorbiscuit
says it can reach over $93,000.
As for price, the only pickup that comes close to the Raptor R is the GMC Hummer EV. Production woes have made this all-electric beast hard to get your hands on, but the highest trim option has been priced at $108,700.
Most of the Hummer EV’s pricetag comes from its massive battery, but GMC also equipped the electric vehicle with the best tech the company could offer.

Cost vs. value of the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R

There’s no denying that the F-150 Raptor R is an impressive machine. But to gauge whether it’s worth the asking price, you need to factor in the other costs related to owning the truck.
For one thing, that V8 engine is a real gas guzzler. In the Mustang, it gets a measly 12 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. The less aerodynamic pickup truck could see those numbers drop even lower.
On top of that, car insurance for F-150 Raptors can be ridiculously expensive. Average annual rates sit at a budget-breaking $3,147.
