background
Jeep
drivers love their cars because Jeeps are always up for any kind of adventure, have great off-roading capabilities, and of course, look great on the roads, too. The
Jeep Compass
Sport is a car that fits all of these typical Jeep criteria, for a price point under $30,000.
But, with conflicting expert reviews and opinions on the car, it’s hard to tell if the 2022 Jeep Compass Sport is a good choice.

What is the 2022 Jeep Compass Sport?

The 2022 Jeep Compass is a car that gives drivers options—it has eight trims to choose from when purchasing. The Jeep Compass Sport is the base model, coming in at a price point of $28,380. For 2022, all Jeep Compass trims got a redesign that included a revised front end, more advanced technology including a better infotainment system, and a redesigned dashboard.
All Jeep Compass trims, including the Sport, are powered by a four-cylinder engine that gets a decent fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Plus, it can get from 0 to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds.
Inside the Jeep Compass Sport, drivers will find a comfortable and modern interior, although cargo and back seat passenger space are not plentiful. Since it’s the base model, it has a standard six-speed automatic transmission, but drivers can add on packages for all-wheel drive and a nine-speed transmission.
Other add-ons include a Cold Weather Package equipped with heated seats, as well as additional safety packages. But, the standard Jeep safety features aren’t bad.

Conflicting reviews make for a difficult decision

While
Car and Driver
liked the Jeep Compass Sport and thought it was a good value for the features,
Consumer Reports
didn’t agree, giving it an overall rating of just 45 out of 100.
Contributing to Consumer Reports overall rating was a one out of five in predicted owner satisfaction, plus a two out of five for predicted reliability.
Consumer Reports found the engine on the Compass to be slow in acceleration, as well as having delayed downshifts and a lackadaisical response. According to CR reviewers, the feel of the car was even worse than its performance metrics would suggest.
While Car and Driver agreed the engine was a point of contention, they felt upgrading to all-wheel drive would still give drivers the ability to enjoy the terrain variety that comes with Jeeps. Overall, Car and Driver characterized the Compass Sport as a good value, while Consumer Reports found the price to be typically higher than better competitors.
While the engine is definitely a pain point on the Compass Sport, Car and Driver isn’t wrong for under $30,000, drivers getting a pretty good bang for their buck in other categories—like interior comfort and technology. While the 2022 Jeep Compass Sport probably isn’t the car for you if you want to go on
wild off-roading adventures
and accelerate fast, it’s not a bad option for everyday driving.
